Sacramento Kings at San Antonio Spurs
Tuesday, October 27, 2026
8:00 PM ET, Frost Bank Center
The Spurs are 18.5-point favorites over the Kings with the total at 230.5. My play is Kings +18.5 (-112).
Eighteen and a half points. That’s what the market is asking San Antonio to win by against a team that has lost every game it’s played but has hung within striking distance in two of them. Sacramento walks into Frost Bank Center at 0-3, and nobody is mistaking this roster for a contender. But a number this big isn’t about who wins. It’s about whether the Spurs will keep their foot on the gas for 48 minutes on a night when they have a flight to Salt Lake City waiting.
Yes, the Kings are bad. Here’s how bad. Sacramento has allowed a 40-point quarter in all three games, and opponents are hanging 124 points a night on them. The shooting is ugly too: the Kings are making 28% of their threes, and Zach LaVine is the only guy defenses respect out there. Doug Christie put it on himself after Sunday’s 123-112 loss to Memphis: “I have to be better for them. This isn’t on them. I’ll take this.”
But they keep hanging around. Look at the scoreboard instead of the vibes. Sacramento lost by 25 at the Clippers, then by 8 to Portland and by 11 to Memphis. Against the Grizzlies they tied it at 106 with 5:30 left before an 11-0 run ended it. LaVine is cooking at 29 points a game, including 37 on Sunday, and Domantas Sabonis is pulling down more than 17 boards a night. Rookie Darius Acuff Jr., the seventh overall pick, shook off a shot-happy first two games with 22 points, seven assists and only one turnover. This team can’t get stops, but it can score enough to stay in range of a number like this.

The Spurs haven’t been a blowout machine yet. San Antonio won 62 games last season and beat Oklahoma City in Game 7 of the West finals, so the respect is earned. Its 1-2 start came against a much tougher slate: a 116-104 loss to the Thunder, a 114-110 loss to Houston in Austin when Amen Thompson blocked Victor Wembanyama at the buzzer, and a 122-106 win at Dallas without Cooper Flagg or Kyrie Irving. Even in that last one the Spurs blew a 14-point lead before pulling away. Add it up and San Antonio has scored 336 points and allowed 336. Dead even. Dylan Harper (20 points a game) has been terrific, and De’Aaron Fox is dishing more than eight assists a night against the franchise that drafted him. But this group hasn’t shown the kind of ruthless, three-hour beatdown it takes to clear 18.5.
The schedule is the Kings’ best friend. San Antonio plays at Utah on Wednesday night, the front end of a back-to-back. If the Spurs are up 20 after three quarters, Mitch Johnson has zero reason to keep Wembanyama, Fox and Stephon Castle out there. That’s when the Kings’ scorers start feasting on bench units, and backdoor covers are born. Sacramento has cleared 110 points in two of its three games, and the market’s team totals (Kings 105.5, Spurs 124.5) point right at a margin just under the spread.
Why I could be wrong. This same Spurs team beat Sacramento 126-97 in the preseason on Oct. 17, a 29-point blowout. Keegan Murray is out with a left ankle injury, which thins out a defense that’s already allergic to stops, and Wembanyama could make life miserable for Sabonis, who got knocked out of rhythm by foul trouble against Memphis after picking up his fourth foul early in the third. If the Kings go cold from three again and the Spurs hit their own threes early, this is over by halftime and the bench minutes won’t matter. Taking 18.5 means you’re betting on an effort level, not on the better team.
Projected score: Spurs 122, Kings 107. San Antonio wins comfortably, the starters sit early, and the Kings sneak inside the number.
The Pick: Kings +18.5 (-112)
