Cleveland Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks
Thursday, October 29, 2026
8:00 PM ET, State Farm Arena
The Atlanta Hawks are 1.5-point favorites over the Cleveland Cavaliers with the total at 239.5 (238.5 in spots), and my play is the Cavaliers on the moneyline at -110.
Somebody in Atlanta needs to go get a rebound. The Hawks have lost three straight, and the local paper put it bluntly after Wednesday’s loss to Miami: Atlanta hasn’t outrebounded an opponent since opening night. Now in walks Cleveland with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley standing next to each other in the paint. The market still has the Hawks as a small favorite, mostly on home court. I don’t think home court covers this much ground.
The Hawks have a hole in the middle
During this skid, Atlanta has been outrebounded by about 10 a night, including 52-35 in Houston and 52-40 against Miami. The Heat piled up 70 points in the paint Wednesday as Giannis Antetokounmpo went for 24 and 18. Coach Quin Snyder didn’t spin it: “Give Miami credit for the way they played. They beat us.”
Center depth was one of the preseason worries about this roster, and it’s showing up. Onyeka Okongwu and Jock Landale are giving honest effort, but Cleveland’s frontcourt is a different animal. Allen is shooting 61% and erasing shots at the rim, and Mobley leads the team at 10 rebounds per game. The Cavs are plus-15 on the boards for the season, and Atlanta hasn’t won that fight against anybody lately.

Cleveland found its spine after the Philly meltdown
The Cavs opened the season by blowing a 29-point lead in Philadelphia, which is the kind of loss that can rot a locker room. Instead, they’ve rattled off three straight wins, and they’re scoring like it. Over the last three games, Cleveland is putting up about 116 points per 100 trips down the floor. Atlanta is scoring about 107.
Wednesday’s 121-111 win over Washington showed the version of this team I’m buying. Cleveland trailed 105-104 in the fourth quarter, then ripped off nine straight points. Mobley drilled a career-high five threes on his way to 24, and Peyton Watson added 22. When the ball sticks, Donovan Mitchell (24.8 a game) and James Harden can still go get a bucket in the half court. That’s exactly the type of offense Atlanta was expected to struggle to match this season.
Atlanta’s numbers are wearing a disguise
The Hawks’ season numbers look healthy at first glance. Then you notice that most of the shine comes from a 47-point blowout of Charlotte. Take that one away and Atlanta has been outscored by about five points per 100 possessions. At home, the defense has given up about 117.5 points per 100, the kind of number that gets the folks in the lower bowl grumbling.
Jalen Johnson is still a stud, flirting with a triple-double most nights. But he went 4-for-12 against Miami. Rookie Kingston Flemings exploded for a career-high 23, which is a fun storyline and also a sign of how thin the help around Johnson has been.
The case against the Cavs
It’s a back-to-back for both teams, but only Cleveland had to get on a plane after last night’s game. Atlanta’s guards will hound the ball. The Hawks force more than 20 turnovers per game, and Dyson Daniels is swiping 3.4 a night. Cleveland was sloppy with the ball in its first two games before cleaning that up. And the Cavs looked rough in their only road game. Neither team had filed its injury report when I wrote this, so check for any rest news on Harden or Mitchell before tip. If Nickeil Alexander-Walker (41.9% from deep) gets hot, Atlanta can cover up a lot of rebounding sins.
Even so, I’d rather back the team that controls the paint and the glass at a coin-flip price. If this number climbs to Atlanta -3, grabbing the points makes more sense than the moneyline.
Projected score: Cavaliers 120, Hawks 115
The Pick: Cavaliers ML (-110)
