Houston Rockets at Dallas Mavericks
Friday, October 30, 2026
8:00 PM ET, American Airlines Center
The Rockets are 5.5-point road favorites with a total of 226.5, and my play is Rockets -5.5 (-115).
Houston just won by 32 without its leading scorer. Let that sink in before you talk yourself into the home dog.
The Rockets are 5-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 season, and Wednesday’s 132-100 demolition in Milwaukee came with Alperen Sengun in street clothes. Fred VanVleet, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL, poured in 24. Amen Thompson added 23. Kevin Durant only needed 18. That’s not a team leaning on one guy. That’s a team with a deep bench to throw at you.
Dallas already got a taste of this
These two opened the season against each other on October 21, and Houston won 128-110 after a 38-12 second quarter that turned the game into a blowout. Jabari Smith Jr. dropped 30. Cooper Flagg scored 32 for Dallas and it barely mattered.
To be fair, the Mavericks have grown up since then. They’re 3-2 under first-year coach Dusty May, and Wednesday’s 120-96 win over Oklahoma City pushed them over .500 for the first time since Flagg arrived. Kyrie Irving, playing his first regular-season home game since tearing his ACL in March 2025, hit his first four shots. Dallas buried a season-best 16 threes. Great night. Also a Thunder team missing Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Cason Wallace and Alex Caruso, and one that shot 5-of-32 from deep. I’m not paying for that box score.

The gap shows up in every possession
Houston scores 123.4 points per 100 possessions, the best mark in the league per Basketball Reference, and its net rating of +14.2 ranks second. Dallas sits at +2.0, a perfectly average team. That’s roughly a 12-point difference over a full game before you account for home court.
The Rockets also live on second chances. They grab 31% of their own misses, fourth-best in the NBA, and Dallas is scrambling for size with Dereck Lively II out and Santi Aldama doubtful as he works back from knee surgery. Every missed Houston jumper is a coin flip for another possession, and that coin is weighted.
Then there’s ball security. Both teams cough it up on 14.9% of their trips, but Houston has the length and the bodies to punish it. The Rockets forced 21 Dallas turnovers in the opener.
How Dallas pulls this off
Sengun (low back soreness) is questionable after a minor strain, and Ime Udoka said he hopes the big man misses “a few games at most.” Houston also hosts Oklahoma City on Saturday, so if Sengun is close, the Rockets might give him one more night. Marcus Smart (forearm) is iffy, Reed Sheppard (back) and Steven Adams (calf) are out. Thin backcourt, thin frontcourt.
Dallas has real counters. Flagg is averaging 25.2 points and 6.8 assists, Irving is off the injury report, and Caleb Martin is back. If the Mavs get another hot shooting night, 5.5 points disappears fast. The number has also already moved from Rockets -4.5 to -5.5 this week, so the cheap version of this bet is gone.
Projected score: Rockets 117, Mavericks 108
Houston is the better team on both ends, the deeper team, and the team that already handled this matchup by 18. I’d play it up to -6.5 and pass at -7.5.
