Cleveland Cavaliers at Milwaukee Bucks

The Cleveland Cavaliers are road favorites of 8.5 to 9.5 points over the Milwaukee Bucks, and the total sits at 237.5. My play is Bucks +9.5 (-110), and I’d still take it at +8.5.
That’s not a sentence I expected to type about a team that just lost by 32 on its own floor. But this number asks Cleveland to do something it hasn’t done once this season: grab a game by the throat and keep squeezing for 48 minutes.
The Cavs Keep Letting Teams Off the Hook
Cleveland is 3-2, and every game has been a coin flip. The Cavs lost the opener in Philadelphia after leading by 29. They needed overtime to get past Minnesota. On Thursday in Atlanta they led by 15 in the first quarter and lost 114-111. Their biggest win of the year is 10 points, over Washington.
Kenny Atkinson isn’t hiding from it. “We haven’t had the great game, that full 48-minute domination, that’s for sure,” he said this week. The advanced numbers back him up: Cleveland sits 16th in net rating and 17th in defensive rating, per Basketball Reference. That’s a middle-of-the-pack team getting priced like a juggernaut on the road, where it’s 0-2.
Milwaukee Has a Way In: The Offensive Glass
Here’s the matchup that keeps the Bucks in this. Milwaukee ranks sixth in offensive rebounding rate and has pulled down 15 or more offensive boards in each of its last three games. Cleveland has given up 15 or more offensive rebounds in three of its five games, including 15 to Atlanta on Thursday.
Atkinson called that out too, saying his team has “got to do a better job getting big rebounds.” Second chances are how an underdog with a shaky half-court offense stays within a number like this.

Life After Giannis
This is a new Bucks team. Giannis Antetokounmpo is in Miami now, Taylor Jenkins is in his first year on the bench, and Tyler Herro, a Milwaukee-area kid who came over in that trade, is carrying the scoring load at 23.4 points a night. Jaime Jaquez Jr. has added 17.8 points and 7.2 rebounds.
Wednesday’s 132-100 loss to Houston was ugly. Jenkins took the blame himself: “I didn’t have our guys prepared.” That’s a coach who gets his group’s attention, and after two days off at home you’d expect a sharper effort against a Cavs team that played Wednesday and Thursday.
Cleveland’s Rotation Is Thinner Than Usual
The Cavs come in shorthanded on the wing. Jaylon Tyson is out with a right ankle sprain, Nae’Qwan Tomlin is out with a low back stress reaction, and rookie Meleek Thomas, who scored 16 in his debut, is questionable with right foot soreness. Milwaukee has nobody on the official injury report.
Donovan Mitchell (24.2 points per game) and James Harden (6.2 assists, plus a season-high 24 points Thursday) are still the best two players on the floor. But Mitchell went 1-for-9 from deep in Atlanta, and tired legs on a short turnaround don’t help a jump shooter.
What Could Burn Me
Milwaukee’s defense is a real problem. The Bucks are 27th in defensive rating, they foul more than almost anyone, and they force the fewest turnovers in the league. Cleveland ranks ninth at getting to the line, so the Cavs could pile up easy points at the stripe. If Mitchell gets hot early and the Bucks’ supporting cast shoots like it did Wednesday (Kyle Kuzma, Myles Turner and Ryan Rollins combined for 0-for-10 from three), this turns into another blowout and the glass won’t save it.
Projected Score
Cleveland should win. I just don’t trust this group to win by double digits on the road, one day removed from a back-to-back, against a rested home team that crashes the offensive boards. The money agrees: most of the tickets are on the Cavs, but most of the dollars are on Milwaukee, and the line has already slipped to 8.5 in a lot of places.
Projected Score: Cavaliers 120, Bucks 113
The Pick: Bucks +9.5 (-110)
