Los Angeles Lakers at Detroit Pistons

The Pistons are 4.5-point favorites at most books with the total at 221.5, and my play is a lean on Pistons -4.5.
Luka Doncic just dropped 53 on Portland. Now the question is whether his back lets him play at all.
The injury that moved the market. This line opened at Detroit -1.5. It’s now 4.5, and the official NBA injury report explains most of that: Doncic is questionable with low back tightness. That’s a big deal for a guy averaging 40.1 points a game, the engine of the best offense in the league. Basketball Reference has the Lakers scoring 122.2 points per 100 possessions, tops in the NBA. Pull Doncic out of that machine and it’s a different car.
Even if he plays, consider the workload. Doncic took 33 shots Friday in a 124-118 comeback win over Portland. He and Austin Reaves both logged more than 38 minutes, and Walker Kessler played 37, per Sports Mole. Then the Lakers got on a plane. They play again Monday in Atlanta.
Detroit has been waiting for them. The Pistons last played Wednesday, a 112-106 loss to Philadelphia, so they get three days of rest against a tired road team. And they’re built to punish fatigue. Detroit allows 103.6 points per 100 possessions, the best defensive mark in the league, and opponents are shooting just 41.7% from the field against them. Tired legs mean short jumpers. Short jumpers against this defense mean long rebounds and Pistons run-outs.
Cade Cunningham runs it all at 24.0 points and 7.6 assists a game, and he had 26 points and 11 assists in Wednesday’s loss. Duncan Robinson hit seven threes in that game. Detroit also took both meetings with the Lakers last season, 128-106 and 113-110.

Why I’m not pounding the table. This is a lean, not a hammer. When I run the season ratings, Detroit comes out about four points better at home. That’s right on top of this number. The edge is in the situation, not the math.
Detroit’s frontcourt is also banged up. Jalen Duren is out with a right hamstring strain and Isaiah Joe is out with a hip contusion. Paul Reed takes the extra center minutes, and Kessler could feast on the glass. And if Doncic plays at full strength, the Lakers at +4.5 might look like the smart side by halftime. He scored 53 two nights ago. He doesn’t need many minutes to wreck a spread.
The Pistons offense isn’t scary either. They score just 113.1 per 100 possessions, close to league average, so covering a four-and-a-half point spread could come down to the last few possessions.
The verdict. Doncic’s back plus a cross-country trip on short rest, against the league’s stingiest defense on three days off, adds up to Detroit. Check the injury report before tip. If Doncic is ruled out and this moves past six, the value is gone.
Projected score: Pistons 114, Lakers 107
The Pick: Pistons -4.5 (-110)
