The Mavericks are 9.5-point favorites at most books with a total of 220.5 (219.5 in spots). My play is the Nets +9.5, and I’ll say up front this is a lean, not a hammer.

Brooklyn is bad. Brooklyn is also stubborn, and stubborn bad teams are exactly the ones that make a 9.5-point favorite sweat.

The tired-legs case is real, and it’s priced. The Nets lost 124-121 in Atlanta on Saturday night after blowing a 17-point first-quarter lead, per Peachtree Hoops, and now they fly into Dallas for the second half of a back-to-back. They’ll do it without rookie point guard Mikel Brown Jr., who the New York Post reports isn’t cleared to play both ends of back-to-backs yet, and without Egor Demin (leg). The market noticed: this opened at Dallas -8.5 and got pushed to -9.5. That’s the move I’d expect, and it’s why I’m not interested in laying it.

The Nets don’t get run off the floor on the road. Brooklyn is 1-4 away from home, but look at how: losses by four in Cleveland, one in Boston and three in Atlanta, plus a win in Indiana. The only road loss by more than nine came at Madison Square Garden. Their offense is ugly, 27th in efficiency per Basketball Reference with too many turnovers, but they finish possessions on defense. Brooklyn ranks third in the league at grabbing defensive rebounds. Michael Porter Jr. (25 points, nine boards Saturday) and Julius Randle give them two guys who can get a bucket when the offense stalls.

Dallas isn’t built to bury people yet. The Mavericks are a perfectly average team so far: 5-4, 17th in offensive efficiency, 11th on defense. Cooper Flagg is putting up 23.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 6.4 assists a night, and he and Kyrie Irving flipped Friday’s game against Utah with a third-quarter run. But they shot a combined 3-for-17 in that first half, per the Mavericks’ own site, and Flagg admitted afterward, “Obviously, I’ve been struggling a little from the field.” Earlier in the week, in their first game as a favorite all season, the Mavs lost by 15 at home to a winless Sacramento team.

Dereck Lively II is still out after foot surgery, and Dallas sits 25th on the defensive glass. That matters against a Nets team that crashes and needs extra possessions to keep pace. And the Mavs have Indiana at home on Monday, so a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter likely means Flagg and Irving sit down early.

Why I could be wrong. Fatigue usually shows up in the fourth quarter, and that’s exactly where Brooklyn faded in Atlanta. Without Brown, the Nets lose their most dangerous pick-and-roll guard, and their turnover problem could turn into a parade of Dallas layups. Three of Dallas’ five wins have come by double digits, including a 24-point thumping of Oklahoma City. If the Mavs’ shooters show up early, this can get away from Brooklyn by halftime.

The bottom line. No clean edge here, and I’m not going to pretend there is. But the line already moved a full point for the obvious reason, and Dallas hasn’t shown me it wins by double digits on command. I’ll take the points with the team that keeps showing up on the road.

Projected score: Mavericks 113, Nets 105

The Pick: Nets +9.5 (-110)
