Recent Form

The Clemson Tigers have had an uncharacteristic year with an 8-3 record. After a week one loss to Georgia, the Tigers have been unable to build any momentum. On top of their losses to NC State and Pittsburgh, Clemson nearly avoided a few other upsets as well. Clemson has a lot to play for this week as a win would put them in the ACC Championship with a Wake Forest loss. Clemson and Wake Forest would be tied, but Clemson has the head-to-head advantage from their victory last week. The Tigers offense sits barely inside the Top 100 with 362.9 YPG, but their defense is 15th in the nation with 317.9 YPG given up.

The Gamecocks enter the final week of the season with a 6-5 record and became bowl eligible in their win last week over Auburn 21-17. South Carolina’s most notable win, aside from Auburn, came over Florida a few weeks ago. While they are out of the mix in the SEC, the Gamecocks have a chance to ruin Clemson’s chances at a conference title in the ACC. South Carolina, much like Clemson, has a better defense than offense. Their offense sits outside the Top 100 at 330.7 YPG, while their defense is 48th at 357.1 YPG.

Clemson Has Something to Play For

After being a perennial team in the College Football Playoff, the Clemson Tigers are in unfamiliar territory with a #23 ranking. This season isn’t a complete loss, though, as they still have an opportunity to win an ACC Championship. A win alone won’t get them there as they sit a game back from Wake Forest, but should they win Saturday and Wake Forest loses, they would be moving in the right direction. This is just two parts of the equation as NC State has the same overall and conference record as Clemson as well as the head-to-head win from earlier in the season. Clemson will need NC State to lose to North Carolina this week as well. While all of this sounds like a lot of hoops for the Tigers to jump through, I think this gives them that much more motivation to not only win this game but win it dominantly.

Clemson Has Owned South Carolina

Over the years, this matchup of two South Carolina teams has seen the Clemson Tigers on top. Going into Saturday, Clemson has won six straight games, all of which by a large margin. The closest game was back in 2015 by a score of 37-32. The following year in 2016, was the largest margin in a 56-7 final. While Clemson is not the same team they were in years past, they still are the best team top to bottom, hence the 11.5-point spread. This game certainly has the makings of being another Clemson victory, but will the 11.5-point spread be too much for them to cover?

Clemson Struggles to Cover

While an 8-3 record looks good on paper, betting in favor of Clemson has left some folks this year with some empty pockets. The Tigers have just a 3-8 record ATS this season and see another large spread to cover this week. Many of the Tigers games, win or lose, have come down to the 4th quarter, where they’ve had to overcome deficits, which makes it hard to cover as a heavy favorite. Looking specifically at this matchup, Clemson is 2-5 ATS in their last seven games at the Gamecocks. Mind you, this 2-5 record was with arguably much better teams than they will take the field with this Saturday. Clemson has the coaching and players to win big, but their trends have shown that this season and their history with the Gamecocks prove otherwise. While the trends are against them, what is at stake may be enough motivation to give them their biggest win of the season.

The Historicals

As mentioned above, the Tigers hold a six-game win streak over the Gamecocks going into this matchup. These teams did not play in the 2020 shortened season, so looking back at the 2019 game, we saw a 38-3 final.

Collin’s Pick to Cover the Spread

The writing is in the stars for Clemson to end their season with a win and put themselves in another ACC Championship with some help from other games. For a team who has struggled to cover this season, saying I was “on the fence” to take Clemson to cover in this one would be an understatement. Given that the Tigers haven’t played to their full potential this season and have a lot to play for, I think we see the best offensive effort of the year from QB D.J. Uiagalelei, and he ends his sophomore season with a big win on the road. Take the Clemson Tigers to cover the 11.5-point spread.
