Last week, the Tennessee Volunteers were demolished in a 36-7 thrashing on the road against no. 14 Missouri. Before that game, I warned bettors that the Vols were entering a difficult circumstantial match-up against a Missouri team playing with high-level energy and seeking a defining quality victory. The Vols walked into a buzzsaw in Columbia, MO, and never matched that energy in the disappointing defeat. However, Tennessee will have the opportunity to right the ship this Saturday in a heavily anticipated showdown with the no. 2 Georgia Bulldogs on Rocky Top.

While motivation should not be a factor this week, the Vols have to find ways to be more consistent on the offensive side of the football. The Vols offense has been electrifying at times on the ground this season, ranking 9th in the FBS, averaging 227 yards per game. RB Jaylen Wright has averaged over 7 yards per carry and is approaching the 1,000-yard plateau on the season. With those things considered, the running game has been stymied to less than 100 yards per game in each of Tennessee’s losses this season. It seems that when the Vols struggle on the ground, then they struggle to find success, and that will be the concern on Saturday against one of the best defenses in college football, the Georgia Bulldogs.

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Tennessee Volunteers Betting Analysis

If Tennessee is going to be able to end the Bulldogs’ win streak or keep this within the betting spread, the Volunteers’ defense is going to have to play well. In last week’s loss to Missouri, the Vols gave up more than 200 yards on the ground to Missouri RB Cody Schrader, and now Georgia enters this picture with a historically strong rushing attack. With that being said, Georgia has not been as dominant on the ground, and the Bulldogs offense is still relying on QB Carson Beck more than Head Coach Kirby Smart likely desires.

In a hostile environment against a physical defense, Georgia will likely need Beck to continue his stellar play. I’m sure there will be opportunities down the field, especially if Georgia gets things going on the ground. However, the key to this spread and a potential upset lies on the other side of the football. The Bulldogs’ defense has been stout against the run, allowing 107 yards per game, but far from the dominant force we have seen during the last two National Championship teams. Rest assured, the Vols are going to run at Georgia and test their prowess upfront. If they get things going on the ground, don’t be surprised if Tennessee contends for the full 60 minutes!

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Tennessee Volunteers Betting Prediction

If this game would have happened a few weeks ago, I would have picked Tennessee in an outright upset. I have had this game circled on my calendar because the Vols match up really well against Georgia. With that being said, Georgia has been playing better with each passing week and really looks like the #1 team in the country at the moment. Still, I’m sticking with my guns and believe the Vols will give Georgia everything they can handle. Bettors are getting solid value here on the underdog in what I believe will be a very close game!
