Utah opens the Morgan Scalley era Thursday night against Idaho with a 34.5-point spread and a total of 57.5. The value here is on the total staying under.

Scalley took over from Kyle Whittingham this offseason after Whittingham stepped down following 20+ years at the helm. Scalley has been on Utah’s staff since 2006, which is why the school called him the coach-in-waiting for years, but this is still his first game as an NCAA head coach at any level. First-time head coaches in Week 1 openers tend to run conservative playbooks. They call the game to win, not to run up the score.

The offensive coordinator is also new. Kevin McGiven came over from Utah State to run Utah’s offense. He replaces Jason Beck, who was Dampier’s coordinator dating back to their time together at New Mexico. Beck followed Whittingham to Michigan. So Dampier is working with a new play-caller for the first time in his college career, and McGiven is designing an offense around Dampier’s dual-threat ability rather than plugging him into an existing scheme.

New head coach. New offensive coordinator. New offensive scheme. First game of the season. That’s the kind of setup where execution takes a series or two to click and drives stall out on penalties and missed communications.

Utah’s identity from 2025 was based on the run. Their 3,462 rushing yards were 4th-most in FBS. Their 6.0 yards per attempt was 3rd-best in the nation. When you’re running the ball that effectively, you’re chewing up clock and shortening the game. Utah scored 30.9 points per game last year with that formula. That’s roughly the pace where Idaho winds up at 10-13 points and the total falls around 42-45. Well under 57.5.

Add in the fact that Utah plays Arkansas next week at home in a much more meaningful game, and Scalley has real motivation to pull his starters as soon as the score gets out of hand. Dampier plays until it’s 24-3 or 28-7, then the backups take over for the second half. Backup offenses don’t put up big numbers against motivated FCS defensive players trying to make plays for their coaches.

Idaho isn’t going to score much. Their 2025 offense was middle-of-the-pack in FCS play, and Utah’s defense returns most of the key pieces from a unit that finished top-20 nationally in scoring defense. A realistic Idaho output is maybe 10 points against Utah’s first-team defense and one late garbage-time score against the backups. Call it 13-17 points total.

Utah wins 42-10, that’s 52 total. Utah wins 45-13, that’s 58. Very close to the number. Utah wins 38-10, that’s 48. Under.

The realistic outcomes cluster right around the total or below it, which means the Over needs almost everything to go right — Utah’s offense clicking from the jump, Idaho scoring a touchdown or two on breaks, and the backups still pushing offensively when the game is already decided. That’s a lot to ask in a season opener.

The Pick: Idaho/Utah Under 57.5
