Texas A&M at Alabama

3:30 PM ET, Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium
Alabama is a 13.5-point home favorite (14 at a couple of shops) with a total of 50.5. My play is Under 50.5.
Texas A&M has played two road games this year and scored six points in each of them. Not six touchdowns. Six points. Now the Aggies walk into Bryant-Denny on Homecoming against a defense that leads the SEC in takeaways, and the market wants 51 points out of this game? I’ll take the other side of that all afternoon.
This one is about two offenses that are not what their reputations say right now. Alabama’s is wounded. Texas A&M’s has been missing on the road all year.
Six points, two road trips, zero touchdowns
The Aggies lost 35-6 at LSU and 27-6 at Missouri, and Marcel Reed has been the face of both. Against FBS teams he’s completing 57 percent of his throws with six touchdowns, six interceptions and 11 sacks. His average dropback actually loses ground on the expected-points scale. Translation: when Reed drops back, the Aggies’ scoring chances usually get worse, not better. Mike Elko has stuck with him anyway, and the offensive line hasn’t given him much help.
Now he gets an Alabama defense that has 16 takeaways, 10 interceptions and four pick-sixes. Opponents are running for 3.1 yards a carry against the Tide, and Alabama has allowed only eight points per game after halftime. If you’re forcing throws under pressure in this building, you’re feeding a secondary that has turned those mistakes into touchdowns.
Elko knows what this road trip demands. “It’s going to take a full 3.5 hours of battling all the ebbs and flows that come with a road game in this conference,” he said Monday. A road offense with no touchdowns hasn’t earned the benefit of the doubt.

The Tide’s offense is running on a spare tire
Alabama’s season numbers still look scary: 39.3 points a game and 6.6 yards per play. Keelon Russell has been terrific, completing 67.5 percent with a 160.9 passer rating. But the last two weeks tell a different story. The Tide scored 17 against Georgia and 10 at Tennessee. In Knoxville they managed 201 total yards and 54 rushing, went 2-for-13 on third down, and Russell was sacked five times and threw two picks. He’s been sacked 21 times in FBS games.
The injury list is the bigger issue. Top receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams, center Racin Delgatty and defensive lineman Terrance Green all missed Tennessee. Then corner Zabien Brown and running back EJ Crowell left that game with lower-leg injuries. Kalen DeBoer said Monday he wouldn’t expect that group “to be practicing all week long.” An offense without its best deep threat or its starting center isn’t the 50-point machine from September.
The Aggies’ defense has also quietly improved. A&M allowed 11.3 points per game in October after giving up 21.5 per game in September, and opponents have averaged just 4.8 yards per pass since the Arkansas game. That’s a unit capable of making Alabama work for every field goal.
How the under gets burned
Alabama’s defense scores, and that’s the biggest threat to this play. Four pick-sixes already, and Reed is turnover-prone, so a single defensive touchdown adds seven points we didn’t plan for. If Coleman-Williams and Delgatty suit up, Russell has the talent to hang 35 on anybody. And if A&M falls behind early and starts throwing out of desperation, the pace and short fields could push this into the 50s. The total has already dropped from 54.5 to 50.5, so the value isn’t as big as it was. I still like it down to 48.5.
Tuscaloosa gets a grinding, field-goal-heavy Saturday where the Tide wins comfortably and nobody needs a calculator for the total.
Projected score: Alabama 30, Texas A&M 13.
