The Oregon Ducks picked up right where they left off last seasonwith a win. Although the Ducks first contest of the 2013 NCAA Football season was not exactly a stellar game of the week, it definitely showed the same consistency of execution known by the Ducks traditional fast-paced, in your face offense.

Oregon simply destroyed the Colonels of Nicholls State 66-3. Sophomore QB Marcus Mariota completed 57 percent of his passes for 234 yards and 1 TD and 0 INTs. Its easy to look good when your team is incredibly more athletic and talented than the opponent but even so, the Ducks looked like a BCS caliber team. Virginia will not be as easy, especially on their own field following a quality win over the BYU Cougars in week 1. Mariota will face more pressure and have to actually check off and make plays that will matter. The Ducks offense along with Jr. RB DeAnthony Thomas who carried the ball 18 times for 128 yards and 2 TDs should take care of business again at Virginia. Oregon scored 66 points in just 19 minutes total possession time while Nicholls State scored 3 points in 40 minutes of possession. Ouch.

Defensively, the Ducks are solid in the secondary as predicted behind CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu.DL Arik Armstead will once again lead the pass rush. Oregons defense will be faster than most teams this year and Virginia is no exception. Oregon is super quick on both sides of the ball and their defense only allowed 3 points in week one; it is crucial for Virginia to score early at home or they may get boat-raced by halftime.

Offensively, Virginia struggled against BYU even though they came from behind to beat the Cougars 19-16. The Cavs offense only racked up 223 total offensive yards. Sophomore QB David Watford ran 10 times for just 10 yards and completed 18 passes for 114 yards. The Cavs will need much more production against the No. 2 team in the land if they want to compete and make a game out of this contest.

The key to Oregons success is their team speed. The Ducks not only have speedy offensive backs and receivers but they have super fast lineman. Last season the Ducks O-line averaged 299 pounds which was 15 pounds less than No.1 Alabamas O-line. Oregons style of offense is catered for quickness rather than massive bodies running over people. Most teams get too tired to hang with the Ducks by the second half, thus speed really does kill but in a great way for Oregon.

Virginias head coach, Mike London, compared Oregons defense to that of the NFLs Green Bay Packers. They force a lot of turnovers. They score a lot of touchdownsTheir whole team can run. Virginia definitely has their work ahead of them in week 2 at home and the sports books are spotting them 3TDs plus a FG already.

The Ducks come into this game already averaging 66 points per game to Virginias 19. Oregon only allowed 3 points last week (against an overmatched opponent in Nicholls State) while the Cavs only gave up 16 and that was against BYU (a decent program). It will be a different ball game for both teams this week but I dont see Oregon having any trouble until they face No. 4 Stanford in early November. I like Oregon to win this contest but Virginia fights hard and covers the points. Luck to ya!
