Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Louisville Cardinals

Louisville is a 12.5-point home favorite over Wake Forest with a total of 58.5. My play is the Demon Deacons getting the points.
The head-to-head ATS trend is one of the most compelling numbers on this week’s card. The underdog is 9-0 against the spread in the last 9 meetings between Wake Forest and Louisville. Nine straight games where the team getting points has covered — that’s a specific rivalry pattern that shows up regardless of records, rankings, or coaching changes on either side. Whatever the reason (styles, familiarity, coaching approaches), this matchup produces underdog covers with remarkable consistency.
Wake Forest is coming off a signature win. They beat Purdue 38-36 in double overtime last week — a Big Ten road win that shows this Deacons team can compete with real competition. Gio Lopez threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns in the win, Ty Clark III rushed for 105 yards, and Carlos Hernandez went for 165 receiving yards and a touchdown. That’s an offense with legitimate weapons and a quarterback playing at a high level.
Louisville, meanwhile, is coming off a Week 3 loss to SMU. That was a home game where the Cardinals were supposed to hold court, and they failed. The Cardinals still have real talent — their offense is graded A-caliber at the national level, and Jeff Brohm has built a legitimate program in his fourth season. But losing a home game to SMU shows the Cardinals aren’t the dominant team the 12.5-point spread suggests.
Jake Dickert is in his second year at Wake Forest, and his program is playing better than expected. The 2OT win over Purdue on the road proves this team travels well and can handle real pressure. Getting nearly two touchdowns against a Louisville team that just lost at home is a scenario the Deacons are equipped to handle.
The specific offensive matchup favors the Deacons keeping this close. Wake Forest’s offense has shown it can score against Big Ten defenses, and Louisville’s defense has real vulnerabilities. If Wake Forest can put up 24-31 points (which they’ve shown they can do against real defenses), and Louisville scores in the 31-38 range (their normal output at home), we’re looking at games decided by 7-14 points. Inside the 12.5 spread easily.
Realistic outcomes: Louisville 34, Wake Forest 24 (10-point margin, Deacons cover +12.5); Louisville 31, Wake Forest 24 (7-point margin, covers by 5.5); Louisville 38, Wake Forest 28 (10-point margin, covers by 2.5); or Louisville 45, Wake Forest 20 (25-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for Wake Forest. Given the 9-0 ATS underdog trend and Louisville’s Week 3 loss, the fourth is less likely than the market prices in.
The Pick: Wake Forest Demon Deacons +12.5
