Point Spread:WV +4 / VT -4
Over/Under Total: 51.5

This Sunday, September 3rd, we will see one of the very few showdowns between two ranked teams. West Virginia, the 22nd ranked team in the country will take on Virginia Tech, who ranks just one spot higher at 21st. This game will be played on a neutral site in Landover, Maryland and will be the 52nd time these two programs faced off. Coming in, West Virginia leads the series 28-22-1 over the Hokies of Virginia Tech but the last two games have gone Va Tech’s way…as has six of the last eight dating back to 1998.

Both of these teams are considered contenders for their respective conferences and of course this game will not have any bearing on the conference standings, but a win in this game would be a great start to the 2017 season. Currently, the point spread as Virginia Tech favored by four points while the over under has been set at 51.5 points combined. At this time, 58% of the betting action is on the Hokies to cover as the favorite and 61% like the score to stay under the posted total, potentially due to Virginia Tech being historically good on the defensive side of the ball.

West Virginia is coming off of a 10-3 season that saw them go 10-2 during the regular season then end it with a Bowl loss to the Miami Hurricanes. The Mountaineers are expecting another great season but it will depend on the play of new starting quarterback, Will Grier and also the play of their defense. Grier is a transfer from Florida who was suspended for the use of PEDs and is making his first start Sunday night against the Hokies. Grier is a great athlete that fits the West Virginia system well…the offense should continue its success. Last season, the West Virginia defense played pretty well especially compared to years past. If they can continue improving, this team could be a serious threat for the Big 12 Title.

For years, Virginia Tech has lived and died by their defense. Last season, the Hokies defense was not as stellar as we are used to, but they were able to make an appearance in the ACC Title Game where they lost to the eventual National Champion, Clemson Tigers. Yes, the Hokies defense took a step back but their offense played rather well. If they can keep the offense moving and get back to the old days of Va Tech defense, they could again contend for the ACC Title.

Both teams coming into this game are replacing huge pieces of their offense but I feel this makes this game even more interesting and it will be pretty competitive. I like both of these teams to win 10 games this season and I also like both teams to be competing for conference titles late in the season. I believe this game is a complete toss up and will come down to the wire late in the fourth quarter. Someone, not sure who, will win this game 27-24.

Bob’sPick to Cover the Point Spread: Due to both teams replacing many starters and the fact that this is the first game of the season between two teams that are very close in talent, I will take the underdog to cover. I like West Virginia plus the four points.
