Event: Canadian Open

Where: Oakdale Country Club

Watch: Golf Channel, CBS

When: June 8-11

The PGA Tour heads north of the border this week for the RBC Canadian Open at the Oakdale Country Club in Toronto. A field that includes eight of the World Golf Rankings’ top 28 players will compete for shares of $9 million in prize money, including a cool $1.6 million to the winner.

Last week Viktor Hovland birdied the first hole of a playoff with Denny McCarthy to win The Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village in Ohio. In picking up his fourth career PGA victory, Hovland also provided his financial backers with a payout of +1600.

Scottie Scheffler showed third last week; Si Woo Kim finished fourth; Jordan Spieth and Andrew Putnam tied for fifth; Adam Schenk and Rory McIlroy tied for seventh; and Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott, and Matt Fitzpatrick tied for ninth.

We missed with our main free golf betting picks last week but picked up a little something on one of our minor bets. Patrick Cantlay (+1100 to win) started well but ballooned over the weekend and finished T-30, while Sungjae Im (+500 to finish top-5) shot 79 on Sunday to finish T-41. But when Hovland and McCarthy both finished at 7-under par Sunday afternoon, our “playoff” prop hit at +350.

The Memorial has now gone to a playoff six times over the last ten years.

As for this week, Oakdale Country Club, hosting this event for the first time, plays to a par-70 at around 7,080 yards. Word is placement off the tee and target-hunting onto the small greens are the keys to success here.

Last year this event was held at St. George’s in Toronto, where Rory McIlroy shot 62 on Sunday to win the Canadian Open for the second playing in a row. Tony Finau placed second, while Justin Thomas took third.

Each week we take a look at the online betting sites and highlight what we believe to be some of the best golf betting values on the board, with a few free picks to click. Odds to win and pairings for this week can be found at Bovada. Here’s our take on some of the field in this week’s Canadian Open.

McIlroy, trying to become the first player to win the same PGA event three times in a row since Steve Stricker won the John Deere Classic from 2009-11, tops the betting on Bovada’s Canadian Open board at +550. Ty Hatton sits as the second choice at +1100, followed by Cam Young, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Sam Burns at +1600. Our top pick comes next.

Corey Conners +1800 to win

Ontarian Conners is trying to become the first Canadian to win the Canadian Open since Pat Fletcher back in 1954! Conners owns six top-20 finishes over his last 15 events, including a win at the Texas Open back in March, a T-8 at Quail Hollow a month ago, and a T-12 at the PGA Championship three weeks ago. He then missed the cut last week at The Memorial, but that’s OK; we like betting guys ripe for bounce-back performances.

Adam Hadwin +700 to finish top-5

This Canuck started pretty good this season, making nine cuts in a row, with three top-10s, then struggled through March and April. He then took second with fellow Canadian Nick Taylor at the New Orleans team event and played some decent golf at the Byron Nelson and the PGA Championship. He then shot 69 on Thursday last week at The Memorial, but a 79 on Friday sent him home early. Again, we like betting guys hungry to rebound.

Elsewhere among Bovada’s Canadian Open prop offerings, McIlroy is lined at +550 to miss the cut and +2000 to win by four shots or more; the threesome of McIlroy, Conners, and Shane Lowry is getting +900 on the “all top-10” board; and Keith Mitchell, on whom we’ve wagered several times already this season, with a taste of success, is getting +1600 on the “top American” board.

The first groups for this Canadian Open go off Thursday morning at 7 am ET.
