Event Overview

Just like that, we have reached the final 2024 event of the PGA Tour season as the field will head to St. Simons Island in Georgia to take on the Seaside and Plantation courses at Sea Island Resort with one last chance to claim victory.

There are some household names in this field who have had success on tour as well as the winner from the 2023 iteration of this very same event. The RSM Classic PGA Tour event, held annually at the prestigious Sea Island Golf Club, is a highlight of the golfing calendar. This tournament, which takes place in the picturesque Golden Isles, has become a beloved fixture for both players and fans alike. Known for its challenging courses, stunning coastal views, and warm Southern hospitality, the RSM Classic offers a unique blend of competitive golf and community spirit.

The Sea Island Golf Club features two exceptional courses: the Seaside Course and the Plantation Course. The Seaside Course, with its links-style layout, provides a true test of skill with its tight fairways, coastal winds, and strategically placed bunkers. Meanwhile, the Plantation Course, redesigned by Davis Love III and his brother Mark, offers a different set of challenges with its tree-lined fairways, water hazards, and undulating greens. Together, these courses create a diverse and demanding environment that pushes the limits of even the most seasoned golfers.

The RSM Classic is not just about the competition; it’s also about giving back. Since its inception, the tournament has been deeply committed to philanthropy, raising millions of dollars for local and national charities. The Davis Love Foundation, which hosts the event, has played a pivotal role in supporting numerous causes, including children’s healthcare, education, and family support services. This dedication to community and charity is a cornerstone of the RSM Classic, making it more than just a golf tournament, but a force for positive change.

My Picks and Predictions

Maverick McNealy – Top 10 Finish (+275)

Maverick McNealy enters this tournament after a T17 finish at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship last weekend. He has a very well-rounded game that is suited perfectly for the challenges that the Seaside and Plantation courses will present in this one. McNealy is average off of the tee, but has the ability to save his play with his putting and shots around the green. I expect the field in general to struggle a bit with tee shots, due to the tight nature of the fairways on the Plantation course and the whipping winds on Seaside, so the ability to execute in the short game and on the green will be key. McNealy finished 6th at the WWT Championship and I expect him to finish in a similar position this weekend. If his putter is dialed, he may even contend for a victory.

Eric Cole – To Win (+3500)

Eric Cole is my longshot pick to win it all at the RSM Classic. Once again, he is a golfer who may struggle off the tee box from time to time, but the rest of his game is suited very well to eradicate those mistakes. He is one of the strongest in the field in his approach play, and if he can find greens in regulation, he has a putting stroke that allows him to put up low scores. His last PGA Tour event came about a month ago at the ZOZO Championship, where he finished tied for 6th. In that tournament, he posted a 0.91 true strokes gained in his approach shots alone, and with a similar showing this weekend, he has a real shot at a win.

Ludvig Aberg – Finishing Position 16th or Worse (EVEN)

Aberg was the winner at the 2023 RSM Classic and did it in dramatic fashion, posting two consecutive 61s on Saturday and Sunday. He is by far the best golfer in this field, but I wonder how consistent his game will be after almost 3 months without participating in a PGA Tour event. Unlike other members of the field, Aberg does not need a victory here to boost his FedEx standings or earn his 2025 tour card. I think the motivation will be lower than usual and the rust may show early. This pick is less about the physical tools of Aberg’s game, and more about the mental aspect.
