Event: The Travelers Championship

Where: TPC River Highlands

Watch: Golf Channel, CBS

When: June 22-25

Fresh off the third Major tournament of this season the PGA Tour heads cross-country to New England this weekend for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. A full PGA field that includes eight of the World Golf Rankings’ top 10 players will scramble for shares of another one of those $20 million purses, including a cool $3.6 mill to the winner – before taxes, of course.

Last week Wyndham Clark held off a couple of the biggest names in the game over the final nine holes to win the US Open at the Los Angeles Country Club. In picking up his second Tour victory in six weeks – he also won the Wells Fargo at Quail Hollow back in May – Clark also provided his financial backers with a tasty payout of +7500.

That’s the second fat payout in a row on the Tour; two weeks ago Canadian Nick Taylor won the Canadian Open at +7000.

Rory McIlroy placed second last week, one shot behind Clark; Scottie Scheffler showed third; Cam Smith finished fourth; Rickie Fowler, who led a good part of the way, Tommy Fleetwood, who shot 63 on Sunday, and Min Woo Lee tied for fifth; Tom Kim and Harris English tied for eighth; and Xander Schauffele, Dustin Johnson, Austin Eckroat and Jon Rahm tied for tenth.

We took a triple-bogey on our free golf betting picks last week. Jordan Spieth (+2500 to win) bogeyed three of his last six holes on Friday to miss the cut by one shot; Corey Conners (+900 to finish top-5) missed the cut by two shots; and Adrian Meronk (+1200 to finish top-10) bogeyed 17 on Friday to also miss the cut by one shot.

As for this week the River Highlands course, home to this event since 1984, plays to a par-70 at around 6,840 yards. So it’s one of the shortest courses on the Tour. The average winning score here over the last five years is 17-under par and Jim Furyk shot an all-time PGA Tour record 58 here back in 2016.

Last year Xander Schauffele opened with a pair of 63’s on his way toward winning the Travelers by two shots over JT Poston and Sahith Theegala. Amateur Michael Thorbjornsen finished fourth; Chesson Hadley took fifth; Kevin Kisner and Keith Mitchell tied for sixth; and Nick Hardy, Brian Harman, Scott Stallings, William McGirt and 2019 Travelers champ Chez Reavie tied for eighth.

Each week we take a look at the online betting sites and highlight what we believe to be some of the best golf betting values on the board, with a few free picks to click. Odds to win and pairings for this week can be found at Bovada. Here’s our take on some of the field for this week’s Travelers Championship.

Scheffler tops the betting on Bovada’s Travelers Championship board at +650. Jon Rahm looms as the second choice at +1000, followed by Patrick Cantlay, who shot a 60 here at the 2011 Travelers, and McIlroy at +1100, Schauffele at +1400 and Viktor Hovland at +1800.

Our top pick is a guy we’ve already bet on a couple times this season, with a 16/1 hit on a win bet back in May.

Jason Day +5000 to win

Australian Day was playing great golf, really, earlier this season, with five top-10 finishes over a 12-tournament stretch. Then we bet him to win at Quail Hollow but he missed the cut. So we bet him again the following week and he won the Byron Nelson at +1600. Now, somewhat puzzlingly, he’s missed three cuts in a row, including last week, when he bombed out with five bogeys over his last nine holes Friday. But he’s better than that. Also, he took a T-8 here at the Travelers in 2019 and a T-10 in 2021. We expect a bounce-back performance this week.

Brian Harman +1200 to finish top-5

Georgia Bulldog Harman is not playing great golf as of late, missing more cuts than he’s made since January. But he owns a great track record here at the Travelers, finishing T-6 in 2018, T-8 in 2019, T-5 in 2021 and T-8 last year. Most recently he opened the US Open last week with a 65, stumbled a bit from there, made the cut, finished poorly on Sunday and still took a T-43. Plus, he ranks No. 8 on the Tour in driving accuracy this season.

Among Bovada’s Travelers Championship prop bets the pairing of Hovland and Collin Morikowa is getting +950 on the “two chances” board; the threesome of Scheffler, Hovland and Morikowa is getting +1000 on the “all top-10” board; and the boxing of Rahm and Scheffler is getting +3500 on the quinella board.
