2008 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Preview
Indian Blessing is the logical choice on numbers in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, but we’re not so sure she won’t get into an early battle down the lane at the wrong time and set up the race for a closer like Intangaroo, Ventura or even Zaftig. The latter has an excellent trainer in Jimmy Jerkens. He can certainly score off the layoff and Zaftig had a dynamite six furlong work on Oct. 18. Four-year-old Ventura is second best on numbers and also had a great work on Oct. 18. Despite having raced on turf in her last four starts, Ventura has won twice on synthetic tracks. She may also have a class and fitness edge after facing older males in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile in her last out and finishing a good second. It will be critical that the riders make their move at exactly the right time in this race (and all the other Breeders’ Cup races for that matter) to take advantage of the collapsing pace. If a rider moves too early on Pro-Ride the mistake seems to be amplified for some reason, and he’ll get nailed at the wire. With that in mind we’ll go with Ventura (Gomez) and Zaftig (Bejarano) to upset on the rider angle. Bejarano and Gomez are 1-2 in the standings at Oak Tree and also have high win percentages. They must know what they are doing. We’ll also be using Indian Blessing and Intangaroo on our exotic tickets and longshot closers Tiz Elemental and Tizzy’s Tune on some smaller saver tickets.
