Preakness Stakes Analysis

You know we hate to play favourites in the Triple Crown races, but this year’s favourite Justify looks too good. The Kentucky Derby winner is the speed of the field but doesn’t need the lead to win, and he has a top rider trainer combo of Mike Smith and Bob Baffert in his corner. The sloppy track won’t even beat him, as he handled the wet goo in Kentucky beautifully when he won the Kentucky Derby.

Now a perfect 4-for-4, Justify looks like a legitimate threat to win the Triple Crown, and we never say that. If he has an off day and winds up dueling on the final turn, Good Magic will be ready.

Good Magic looked like he was one race short of his best in the Kentucky Derby when he finished second to Justify and he might have been in the Derby photo with one more race under his girth. Trained by 30-percent trainer Chad Brown, we expect this Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-G1 winner to move forward off the Derby, but Justify could also improve, which makes this race a repeat of the Derby.

Justify and Good Magic will make a short-priced Preakness exactor, and we’ll take those two on top of all in the Preakness Trifecta and Superfecta. Third and fourth place are up for grabs but we’ll also probably play straight Preakness trifectas with Justify-Good Magic-Lone Sailor and Justify-Good Magic-Bravazo, with smaller straight trifectas reversing the top two. We’ll also make a small win-place bet on Good Magic on the chance he improves and the favourite falters. And only because he should be a better price.

Good Luck!
