We’re going to keep this short. The Preakness looks like a three horse race and the best way to play it is to bet the best overlay among Dortmund, American Pharoah and Firing Line.
American Pharoah looks like he could be a legitimate threat to win the Triple Crown. He moved way up in class in the Kentucky Derby and still got the job done. There was no questioning his talent going into the race, and he also proved he could fight to win. Now things get a little tougher at a short price.
Can he put together two or three performances in a row like his Kentucky Derby? If he can he willbecome the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. And he could very well do that.
The odds will be too low for our liking in the Preakness however, so we’ll go right back to our Derby pick, Dortmund. He just looked plain flat and tired in the Derby. He had no fight in him. That wasn’t the Dortmund we’d previously seen win six in a row. At 7/2 on the morning line he looks like he could be a great play.
Dortmund may have peaked before the Kentucky Derby, but because he ran so uncharacteristically dull in that race we’re hoping he rebounds back to his best form. If he does, American Pharoah will have his hooves full.
Firing Line ran the race of his life to finish second in the Kentucky Derby and he could very well be set to improve again. We did like him in the Derby and he’s certainly a contender to win the Preakness, but if both American Pharoah and Dortmund run their best races, we don’t think he can beat both of them.
We’ll take Dortmund to rebound and win the Preakness mainly on price and use him over top of American Pharoah and Firing Line in the exacta and reverse that bet for half the amount, while also boxing those three in the trifecta and using them on top in the Preakness Superfecta.
