Wrong Time Showcase

When this series was slated to appear on national television, the hope was that the Angels and Dodgers would both be rolling toward the postseason and in control of their divisions. At the very least, the expectation was that some positive momentum would come into this matchup. But the opposite has occurred, as the Angels went into a tailspin with a 14-game losing streak that cost Joe Maddon his job, and the Dodgers are only barely hanging on to first place after the Giants let them know they aren’t going anywhere by sweeping them.
Things have only gotten worse for the Dodgers, given that Walker Buehler is now headed to the DL, and the rotation has gotten thinner as a result. Still, at least Los Angeles had a cushion to lose before things went totally south on them. The Angels did not, and there’s now a very real fear that this team isn’t going to get off the mat and make any sort of charge at the postseason.

Back With a Vengeance

The Angels might be set to waste another year of Trout’s career, but for once, it hasn’t been entirely their fault for most of the season. Trout really hadn’t been playing all that well during the skid, as he managed just four hits in a 12-game stretch and had ten games where he failed to raise his batting average at all.
However, Trout has stepped up his play in the Angels’ past four games, collecting seven hits and scoring four times. Trout’s numbers haven’t been a complete disaster, but they are low enough to be a genuine concern for a player who has been an MVP despite playing on a losing team year after year. If the Angels can get the rest of the lineup on the same page as Trout and get them all hitting the ball at a solid level, they might still have a chance at making a move in the division.

Will Rodgers Sports HandicapperI won my last two MLB playoff picks and am going for three straight on Friday in Game 1 of the World Series! I had a sparkling run down the stretch (in the regular season), and look to finish in the same fashion in the postseason. Hop on board now!

Mr. Consistency

It’s a shame that most sportsbooks don’t let you bet on the number of innings thrown and earned runs given up by a pitcher. If they did, Tony Gonsolin would be about as safe a bet as you can get in the first half of 2022. Gonsolin has a 7-0 record in part because he simply goes out and does his job and lets the numbers take care of themselves.
So far, it’s working well. Gonsolin isn’t just unbeaten, he’s also given up no more than two earned runs in any of his appearances this season and hasn’t given up more than four hits since his first start of the year. What’s more, he’s been the model of consistency when it comes to how many innings he can go, as he’s safely navigated through the sixth inning on five straight starts. Gonsolin isn’t trying to overpower anyone the way some modern pitchers do, as he hasn’t recorded more than seven strikeouts in a game this year. But given that the Dodgers are 8-3 when he takes the mound, nobody in blue is worried about whether he can miss bats or not.

Weather Report

It’s going to be a warm evening for this edition of the Freeway Series, with temperatures hitting 80 degrees and wind blowing at nine miles per hour toward right-center field.

Dan’s pick

With Gonsolin on the mound, it’s hard to pick against the Dodgers, especially given his opponent. The Dodgers believe in Gonsolin, and he’s shown no signs of having any problems this season when he’s on the hill. Syndergaard has had a few issues keeping runs off the board, and there’s a real chance the Angel lineup doesn’t provide enough offense to keep Syndergaard in line for a win.
The Dodgers are playing better and have the better pitcher on the mound. Throw in home field, and the way forward is clear. I’ll back the Dodgers.
