Kansas City is a 6.5-point home favorite over Indianapolis on Sunday Night Football with a total of 46.5. My play is the Under.

The total moved down from 47.5 to 46.5 since opening. That’s a signal that sharp money is on the Under side of the market, and the reason for that movement lines up with the injury profiles on both sides.

Patrick Mahomes is coming off knee surgery and playing his second game in seven days. That’s an aggressive recovery timeline for anyone, and specifically for a quarterback who relies on mobility to extend plays. Mahomes played well in Week 1 against Denver (31-10 win), but the concern is what happens when the knee gets tested by a full week of practice plus another game. Late in games where Mahomes typically pushes for the big play, his mobility and decision-making could be compromised. That translates to shorter drives, more punts, and fewer explosive scoring plays.

Daniel Jones is on the other side of the ball, and his profile is even more concerning. Jones is returning from December 2025 Achilles surgery — that’s nine months post-op, which is aggressive for that specific injury. In Week 1, he threw for meaningful yardage against Baltimore’s defense, but the Colts scored just 23 points and lost 41-23. That’s an offense that had trouble sustaining drives against a top-tier defense. Kansas City’s defense is comparable to Baltimore’s in quality, and Jones will face similar issues here.

The Colts road profile from 2025 is worth acknowledging. Indianapolis is 2-6 on the road since the start of the 2025 season. That’s not just a bad stretch — that’s a specific weakness for a program that struggles in hostile environments. Arrowhead Stadium is one of the loudest venues in the NFL, and playing there on a primetime national broadcast adds another layer of difficulty for a limited quarterback and an unstable offensive line.

Primetime NFL games have gone Under 3 of 5 times this season. That’s a small sample but it aligns with the broader NFL pattern of night games producing lower-scoring outcomes than expected. The bright lights, the additional pressure, and the tendency for coaches to play conservatively when the game is being watched by everyone all combine to suppress total points.

The Chiefs’ offense in Week 1 wasn’t a shootout either. They won 31-10, but Denver’s defense was already elite and Mahomes wasn’t asked to force downfield throws late in the game. That template is likely to repeat — Kansas City wins by controlling clock and letting Mahomes make plays when needed, without pushing tempo. That’s a game script that produces mid-20s scoring for Kansas City rather than 35+.

Realistic outcomes: Chiefs 24, Colts 17 (41 total); Chiefs 27, Colts 14 (41 total); Chiefs 24, Colts 13 (37 total); or Chiefs 30, Colts 20 (50 total, over). Three of four scenarios stay under 46.5. Only if Mahomes pushes for big-play opportunities against a Colts secondary that’s likely to give up chunk plays does the total push over, and Mahomes on a repaired knee playing his second game in seven days isn’t the setup for aggressive downfield throws.

The Pick: Colts/Chiefs Under 46.5
