The Rockies and Diamondbacks are way back in their NL West race, but they remain in the mix in the National League wild-card race, heading into the middle game of this three-game series in Phoenix. Colorado’s held the upper hand in the recent rivalry with Arizona, but the D’Backs took the opener of this series Friday night. Who do we like here for our free MLB pick for Saturday?

MLB Betting Odds

Saturday’s MLB betting odds opened Arizona and Ray at around -125 over Colorado and Gray, with an over/under of nine runs. Early betting action then dipped that line down to about -115 and the total to eight runs.

Rockies vs. Diamondbacks Set-Up

Arizona grabbed the opener of this series Friday night 8-0, winning as a -165 favorite on the MLB betting line with Zack Greinke. The Diamondbacks broke the ice with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning Friday, then broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fifth and breezed from there.

Also, Friday’s game just sneaked under its total of 8.5 runs.

With Friday’s loss, Colorado now owns a four-game losing streak, part of a current 4-9 skid.

Friday’s win snapped a three-game losing streak for Arizona.

At 44-43 and 44-45, respectively, the Rockies and Diamondbacks trail the division-leading Dodgers by 14.5 and 15.5 games in the NL West. But they’re also just 1.5 and 2.5 games behind the Cubs in the battle for the second National League wild-card spot.

Colorado now leads the season series with Arizona eight games to three.

Saturday’s Starting Arms

Lefty Ray, by our strict standards, is just 3/18 on quality starts this season and 0 for his last four.

Last Sunday he gave up four runs and six hits through four innings of a 10-4 loss at San Francisco. And over his last four starts, he’s allowed 15 runs and 19 hits, including seven home runs, through 22 1/3 innings.

The D’Backs are 8-10 with Ray this season, 0-4 over his last four starts.

Over his last six starts against Colorado, three last year and three already this season, Ray allowed 21 earned runs and 38 hits through 32 innings. Arizona only won two of those six games.

Gray is 9/17 on quality starts this year, working on a run of three in a row. Last Saturday he held the Dodgers to three runs – two earned – and seven hits through 6 2/3 innings of a 5-3 Rockies victory. And over his last three starts, he’s allowed just three ER and 17 hits through 18 2/3 innings.

Colorado is 11-6 with Gray this season, 3-0 over his last three starts.

Over his last four starts against the Diamondbacks, two last year and two this year, Gray allowed 10 ER and 21 hits through 19 1/3 innings. The Rockies won three of those four games.

Saturday’s Batting Splits

Colorado is batting .274/.335/.470 against left-handed pitching this season.

Arizona is batting .247/.316/.423 against right-handed pitching this season.

The Bullpens

The Rockies bullpen owns a 4.68 ERA this season and a 1.37 WHIP while allowing a .757 OPS.

The Diamondbacks pen owns a 4.42 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP while allowing a .748 OPS.

Totals Report

  • Overs are 45-38 in Rockies games this season, but unders are 22-18 in Rockies road games.
  • Overs are 45-40 in Diamondbacks games this season.
  • Unders are 20-17 in games played at Chase Field this season.
  • Unders are 10-6 with Gray this season.
  • Overs are 10-8 with Ray this season.
  • Overs are 6-5 in Rockies-D’Backs games this season.

Free MLB Pick

Gray owns the edge in the pitching match-up, and Colorado holds the edge with the sticks. Plus, the Rockies seem to have Arizona’s number for the moment, and they’re getting the underdog price. We like Colorado for our free MLB pick for Saturday.
