Over/Under: 8

The Rockies beat Jake deGrom at a nice, fat underdog price Friday night and now shoot for the series victory over the Mets Saturday night in Queens. Who do we like here for today’s MLB picks?

MLB Betting Odds

Saturday’s MLB betting odds opened New York and Matz at around -110 over Colorado and Gray, with an over/under of eight runs. Early betting action then bumped that line about a nickel, to around -115.

Rockies vs. Mets Set-Up

Colorado opened this series with a 5-1 win Friday night, cashing in as a +185 underdog on the MLB betting line. The Rockies scored two runs in the first three innings against deGrom, then pulled away with three runs in the eighth of the New York bullpen.

Also, Friday’s game played under a total of 7.5 runs.

With Friday’s win, Colorado is 10-2 over its last 12 games. At 33-29 overall the Rockies trail the division-leading Dodgers by nine games in the NL West, but they’re also just a half-game behind Atlanta in the battle for the second National League wild-card spot.

With Friday’s loss, New York is 3-6 over its last nine games. At 30-33 overall the Mets now trail the division-leading Phillies by six games in the NL East, and they’re four games back of the Braves in that wild-card race.

This series is the first meeting between these two teams this season. Last year the Rockies took the season series from the Mets six games to one.

Saturday’s Starting Arms

Lefty Matz is 5/11 on quality starts this season and two for his last three. Last Sunday he gave up five runs and eight hits, including a couple of dingers, through six innings of a 7-1 New York loss to Arizona. But in his two starts previous to that against Washington and the Dodgers he only allowed three runs through 12 innings of a pair of Mets wins.

On the season New York is 7-4 with Matz, 2-1 over his last three outings.

Matz started twice against Colorado last year; in the first game, at Citi Field, he held the Rockies to one run and three hits through six frames; but in the second game out in Denver he gave up five runs and eight hits through 5 2/3 innings. The Mets lost both those games.

Gray, by our stringent standards, is 6/12 on quality starts this year, and two outs away from being three for his last three. Last Saturday he held Toronto scoreless on two hits through 6 2/3 innings of a 4-2 Colorado victory. And over his last three starts, he’s allowed just five runs and 14 hits through 19 innings.

The Rockies are 7-5 with Gray this year, 3-0 over his last three starts.

This will be Gray’s first start against New York since 2017 when he gave up eight runs in two innings in a 14-2 loss.

14-2 loss.

Saturday’s Batting Splits

Colorado is batting .260/.317/.459 against left-handed pitching this season.

New York is batting .244/.320/.410 against right-handed pitching this season.

The Bullpens

The Rockies bullpen owns a 3.98 ERA this season and a 1.35 WHIP, which ain’t too bad, considering they play half their games in Denver.

The Mets pen owns an atrocious 5.11 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP.

Totals Report

  • Overs are 32-28 in Rockies games this season.
  • Overs are 32-25 in Mets games this season.
  • Overs are 14-12 in games played at Citi Field this season.
  • Unders are 8-4 with Gray this season.
  • Overs played 4-3 in Rockies-Mets games last season, but two of the three games at Citi Field played under.

Free MLB Pick

Colorado is one of the hotter teams in Baseball at the moment, while New York is struggling to keep its head above water. Also, the Rockies own edges with the sticks and in the bullpen comparison. We’ll take Colorado for our free MLB pick for Saturday.
