The Rockies and Giants open a three-game NL West series out by the Bay Monday night. How are we playing this game for our free MLB pick?

MLB Betting Odds

Monday’s MLB betting odds opened Colorado and Gray at around -130 over San Francisco and Pomeranz, with an over/under of 8.5 runs. Early betting action then bumped that line about a dime, to around -140.

The Rockies could also be found getting around +125 giving the run and a half on the MLB run line.

Rockies vs. Giants Set-Up

Colorado just got swept three games by the Dodgers in Los Angeles over the weekend, losing Sunday’s series finale 6-3 on a three-run LA homer in the bottom of the ninth. In fact, the Rockies lost all three of those games to the Dodgers on walk-off home runs.

Just before that Colorado swept three games at Arizona; just before that the Rockies split four games with San Diego; and just before that they took two of three from the Cubs. So Colorado is 7-6 over its last 13 games.

San Francisco, meanwhile, just took two of three games from the Diamondbacks in Phoenix over the weekend, missing out on the sweep by losing Sunday 3-2 in 10 innings.

Just before that the Giants dropped three of four to the Dodgers in LA, but just before that they won back-to-back series against Milwaukee and the Padres. So San Francisco is 7-5 over its last 12 games.

At 40-37 overall the Rockies trail the division-leading Dodgers by 13 games in the NL West, while the Giants, at 33-43, are 19.5 games out of first. But Colorado is also tied with St. Louis for second place in the National League wild-card race, with San Francisco “just” 6.5 games back.

The Giants lead the season series with Rockies four games to two.

Monday’s Starting Arms

Lefty Pomeranz is just 1/13 on quality starts this season, although a bit of that is due to a short leash. Last Wednesday he got nicked for seven runs and nine hits, including three homers, through just 4 1/3 innings of a 9-2 San Francisco loss to the Dodgers. But over his two starts previous to that he gave up just two runs – none earned – and eight hits through 10 innings.

The Giants are 6-7 with Pomeranz this season, 2-1 over his last three starts.

In his most recent start against Colorado back in April of this season Pomeranz allowed two runs and four hits through five frames of a 3-2 San Francisco victory.

Gray is 7/15 on quality starts this season, one for his last three. Last Wednesday he held the Diamondbacks to two runs – one earned – and six hits through six innings of a 6-4 Rockies win. But over his two starts previous to that he gave up eight runs and 17 hits through 11 2/3 innings.

The Rockies are 9-6 with Gray this season, and 5-1 over his last six starts.

Over his last four starts against the Giants, three last year and one earlier this season, Gray gave up 15 runs and 27 hits through 17 2/3 innings. Colorado only won one of those four games.

Monday’s Batting Splits

The Rockies are batting ,281/.343/.479 against left-handed pitching this season, which ranks this unit among the top seven in the Majors in this split.

San Francisco is batting .227/.294/.387 against right-handed pitching this season, which ranks this unit among the bottom three in the Majors in this split.

The Bullpens

  • The Rockies bullpen owns a 4.52 ERA this season and a 1.39 WHIP.
  • The Giants pen owns a 3.84 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP, which ranks this unit among the top half-dozen reliever corps in Baseball.

Totals Report

  • Overs are 40-33 in Rockies games this season, but unders are 19-17 in Rockies road games.
  • Overs are 39-33 in Giants games this season.
  • Overs are 18-14 in games played at Oracle Park this season.
  • Unders are a combined 15-11 in games started by Pomeranz and Gray this season.
  • Unders are 3-2 in Rockies-Giants games this season.

Free MLB Pick

Pomeranz was good in his last outing against Colorado, and while the Rockies own an advantage with the sticks San Francisco owns an edge in the bullpen. So we see betting value here with the home-dog Giants.
