What Did We Learn From Last Weekend?
Something’s in the water with the Toyotas, y’all. Denny Hamlin took the win at Michigan by over 11 seconds, leading a total of 40 laps and the one that mattered most. This 63rd win tied Hamlin with Kyle Busch’s 9th place record on the Cup Series all-time wins. For Hamlin, what a victory it was. After winning the pole and then being relegated to 37th after unapproved changes, he managed to get to the top later in the race after struggling through much of the first half. This is the second week in a row that he came from the back to the front to win. Hamlin had an advantage with four new tires in a late restart and got to the front after his stop. All it takes at MIS are fresh tires and clean air, and you’re gone. He locked into that front runner spot with a purpose and never looked back.
Hamlin managed to close the gap on Reddick, who led 33 laps before being involved in one of the record 11 caution flags. There was a 20 minute red flag at one point, and the field was just a mess and a half for a lot of this race. For Erik Jones, it was a great day. The Michigan native had a season best runner up finish followed by fellow Toyota driver, Bubba Wallace. Kyle Larson and Carson Hocevar rounded out your top 5 spots. Hocevar is heading into this weekend’s race with a few more enemies than usual after causing a big pileup when John Hunter Nemechek had some sort of malfunction and Hocevar clipped him and caused a little bit of chaos. He was able to drive away but many were not that lucky. I reckon that Hocevar will need to look in his rear view a little more this weekend.
Where Are We Headed This Weekend?
Luckily, Pocono is another track that drivers are going to be able to pull away from the rest of the field in clean air and with good tires. Pocono is a 2.5-mile asphalt tri-oval with 14 degrees of banking in turn 1, 8 degrees in turn 2, and 6 degrees in turn 3. It’s a longer track than Michigan but similar in speed. Boasting the longest front stretch in NASCAR, this track is heavy on the importance of aerodynamics and horsepower. The trick is that with varying degrees of banking in each turn, setup can be challenging to get just right. In fact, most miss the mark and setup their cars for a particular turn or two and just work on maintaining through the track. It’s a tough battle, with perseverance winning this race.
Odds and Value Picks
To pick a winner is not too challenging versus other races. We have a great race to compare to from last weekend that is as similar as you’re going to get. The drivers that thrived at Michigan will be the ones that thrive this weekend as well, but the caveat is that we will see fewer cautions and a more spread out field. Hopefully, this results in less carnage and some better finishes for some of these drivers and team. Current NASCAR betting odds are available at Bovada. Let’s take a look at your potential winners this weekend at Pocono:
Winner: Denny Hamlin (+250)
I mean, Hamlin’s average finish is 1.7 in his last 3 races. He’s got a win and 2 runner ups. Dude is coming off two weekends of consecutive wins and into another track where he just dominates. As much as I hate to repeat a winner, I picked him last weekend and he won. I anticipate him doing the same this weekend.
Mid-Range Pick: Brad Keselowski (+2800)
So Keselowski needs to show up better this weekend. If he can do that and stay out of cautions…and not be a caution…he’s got a shot. Michigan is a home track and a place he traditionally does well at. Last weekend was unfortunate. This is an opportunity to redeem himself. With 28 career starts, he boasts the best average finish at 10.7 with one win, 11 top 5s, and 17 top 10s.
Dark Horse: Erik Jones (+5000)
Jones is coming off a season-best runner-up at Michigan and will be heading to another track where he shows strength. Jones is 8th in all time average finishes with 14 total starts. In his last three starts, he has a top 10. With his momentum from Michigan, Jones is digging for another solid run this weekend.
Points Picture Heading Into Pocono
Jones’ finish at Michigan bumped him three spots in the standings. He’s currently sitting 18th, just 18 points outside of the top 16. MIS gave us a lot of movement in the standings after the chaos. Let’s see where the top 16 are sitting now after Sunday’s race:
1. Tyler Reddick
2. Denny Hamlin
3. Ryan Blaney
4. Chase Elliott
5. Ty Gibbs
6. Kyle Larson
7. Carson Hocevar
8. Chris Buescher
9. Daniel Suarez
10. Christopher Bell
11. Bubba Wallace
12. William Byron
13. Chase Briscoe
14. Shane Van Gisbergen
15. Brad Keselowski
16. Austin Cindric
Keselowski and SVG both lost 2 spots. Bell lost 3 positions after a gnarly wreck with Chase Elliott that many are saying was the hardest hit in NASCAR. They’ll have some work to do this weekend to sure up their spots. Stay tuned for another great afternoon of racing this Sunday at Pocono Raceway!
