Over/Under: 7.5

The NL West-leading Dodgers, owners of the best record in baseball, begin a three-game series with the rival Giants Friday night in San Francisco. How are we betting this game with our free MLB pick?

MLB Betting Odds

Friday’s MLB betting odds opened LA and Kershaw at around -215 over San Francisco and Pomeranz, with an over/under of 7.5 runs. Early betting action then pushed that line up to -235.

The Dodgers could also be found “getting” around -135 giving the run and a half on the MLB run line.

Dodgers vs. Giants Set-Up

Los Angeles just took two of three games from the Diamondbacks in Arizona earlier this week, missing out on the sweep by losing the series finale Wednesday 3-2. The Dodgers then had Thursday off.

Just before that LA swept three games at home from Philadelphia; just before that they took three of four at home from the Mets; and just before that they swept three games from the Pirates in Pittsburgh. So Los Angeles is 4-0 over its last four series and 11-2 over its last 13 games.

San Francisco, meanwhile, just dropped two of three games to the Mets in New York, losing Thursday’s series rubber match 7-3. The Giants then flew home cross-country.

Just before that San Francisco took two of three games from the Orioles in Baltimore; just before that the Giants dropped two of three in Miami. Going back a bit further San Francisco is 1-4 over its last five series but 4-3 over its last seven games.

At 43-20 overall, the best record in the Majors, the Dodgers lead the NL West by 10 games over second-place Colorado and by 17 games over the 25-36 Giants.

These teams have split six meetings so far this season.

Friday’s Starting Arms

Lefty Pomeranz is just 1/10 on quality starts this season, and 0 for his last five. Last Friday he got bombed by Baltimore for eight runs and two home runs in less than two innings of a 9-6 San Francisco loss. And over his last five starts he’s allowed 25 runs and 28 hits, including seven ding-dongs, through just 14 1/3 innings.

The Giants are 4-6 with Pomeranz this season, 1-4 over his last five starts.

In two starts already this season against Los Angeles Pomeranz allowed five runs and nine hits, including three homers, through nine innings. San Francisco split those two games.

Fellow southpaw Kershaw, by our strict standards, is 6/9 on quality starts this season, and three for his last four. Last Saturday he held the Phillies to one run and six hits through seven frames of a 4-3 Dodgers victory. And over his last four starts he’s allowed nine runs and 27 hits through 26 1/3 innings.

Los Angeles is a perfect 9-0 with Kershaw this season.

In four starts last year against the Giants Kershaw allowed eight runs and 26 hits through 26 innings. The Dodgers only managed a split of those four games.

Friday’s Batting Splits

Los Angeles is batting .257/.345/.436 against left-handed pitching this season.

San Francisco is batting .220/.285/.336 against LH pitching this season, which ranks this unit among the bottom three in the Majors in this split.

The Bullpens

  • The Dodgers bullpen owns a 4.49 ERA this season and a 1.23 WHIP.
  • The Giants pen owns a 3.82 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP, which ranks this unit among the top five reliever corps in Baseball.

Totals Report

  • Overs are 31-29 in Dodgers games this season.
  • Overs are 31-28 in Giants games this season.
  • Overs are 15-11 in games played at Oracle Park this season.
  • Totals are split 3-3 in Dodgers-Giants games this season.
  • Unders are a combined 10-9 in games started by Pomeranz and Kershaw this season.

Free MLB Pick

Kershaw owns an obvious advantage in this pitching match-up, and Los Angeles owns another advantage with the sticks. We’re not exactly going out on a limb here but we like the Dodgers. But we also like to chase better prices so we’ll play LA on the run line for our free MLB pick for Friday.
