After splitting the first two games of this three-game rivalry series, the Dodgers and Padres play a rubber match Wednesday night in San Diego. LA is off to an 8-4 start to this season, which comes as no surprise. But the Padres are 7-5 and think they’ve got a good shot at a playoff berth. How are we playing this game for our free MLB pick?
MLB Betting Odds
Wednesday’s MLB betting odds opened LA and Stripling at around -140 over San Diego and Richards, with an over/under of 8.5 runs. Early betting action then dipped LA down about 20 cents, to around -120.
The Dodgers could also be found getting around +125, giving the run and a half on the run line.
Dodgers vs. Padres Set-Up
San Diego took the opener of this series Monday night 5-4, cashing in as a +120 home dog on the MLB betting odds. But Los Angeles then took Tuesday’s game 5-2, winning as a -140 favorite and covering against the run line at a price of +140.
The Padres led Tuesday night’s game 2-0, as starter Dinelson Lamet took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. But a couple of San Diego errors aided a couple of two-out Dodgers rallied, and LA came from behind for the victory.
At 8-4 on the season, Los Angeles trails division-leading Colorado by one game in the NL West. At 7-5, San Diego sits one game back of the Dodgers and two back of the Rockies.
The Padres are playing against a season-wins over/under of 31 for this abbreviated MLB season, so they’re off to a good start for those who bet the over.
Last year the Dodgers took the season series from the Padres 13-6, going 7-2 at Petco Park.

Wednesday’s Starting Arms
Richards is 0/2 on quality starts this season. Last Friday, he gave up four runs and eight hits through 5 2/3 of an 8-7 Padres win over Colorado, but five days before that, he held Arizona scoreless on one hit through five frames, although San Diego lost that game 4-3.
Richards is trying to bounce back this season after being limited to three games last season due to a shoulder injury.
This will be Richards first start against the Dodgers since 2015 when he was with the Angels, and that’s already a long time ago.
Stripling is one/two on quality starts this season. Last Thursday, he allowed three runs and four hits through 5 1/3 innings of a 6-3 Los Angeles victory over the Diamondbacks. And six days before that, he held San Francisco to one run and four hits through seven innings of a 9-1 Dodgers win.
Last year Stripling hit just 2/13 on quality starts, but LA played 8-5 with him.
Over two starts last year against San Diego Stripling gave up seven runs and ten hits, including a couple of homers, through 7 1/3 innings. The Dodgers split those two games.

Free MLB Pick
We give the Dodgers slight edges in the pitching match-up, with the sticks and in the comparison of the bullpens. So we like LA here. And we also like to take chances. So we’ll give the 1.5 runs and play the Dodgers against the run line for our free MLB pick for Wednesday.
