Oregon State Beavers at Houston Cougars

Houston is a 20.5-point home favorite over Oregon State on Saturday morning with a total of 51.5. The value here is on the road team getting a big number of points.
Here’s what the market seems to be forgetting. These two teams played on September 26, 2025 in Corvallis. Houston was 4-0 at the time, ranked, and playing arguably its best football under Willie Fritz. They needed overtime to win 27-24. That was 11 months ago. Now Houston is a 20.5-point favorite over the same core Oregon State roster at home. The gap between “eking out an OT win in Corvallis” and “winning by three touchdowns at home” is enormous, and I don’t think the personnel changes on either side justify that swing.
Oregon State returns their two most important offensive players from last year’s team. Anthony Hankerson is one of the more productive running backs on the West Coast, and Maalik Murphy is a legitimate SEC-caliber transfer at quarterback who spent time at Texas and Duke before landing at Oregon State. The Beavers went 2-10 last year, but the offensive DNA that gave Houston fits in Corvallis is intact.
Willie Fritz has done a nice job in Houston. The Cougars have real talent, they’re returning Conner Weigman at QB, and they’ve climbed to a preseason Top 25 ranking on the strength of a 10-3 finish that included a bowl win over LSU. But this is Week 1. Fritz is a coach who values fundamentals and execution over gaudy stats. He isn’t the type to run up the score. And the Cougars have a legitimate road test at Texas Tech in Week 3, so there’s some incentive to keep the playbook conservative and not put too much on film against a team that isn’t a Big 12 opponent.
Sharp money has been moving toward Houston — the spread has crept from -18.5 to -20.5, which tells you the market thinks Houston is going to dominate. That may be right. But at -20.5, all the value has been squeezed out of Houston’s side. Every incremental Houston backer has already gotten in. The value is what’s left, and that’s on Oregon State.
The Beavers went 4-0 to the Over in their last four games with totals set at 50 or more. They’re capable of scoring in the mid-to-high 20s in the right matchup. If Oregon State hangs 24 or 27 on Houston like they did last year and the Cougars win 34-24 or 41-27, both of those results cash the +20.5 comfortably.
I considered the Over 51.5. Both teams played to a 51-point game last year, and the total has moved up a point on the same basis. There’s a case there. But the historical head-to-head and the value on the number tell me the side is the cleaner read.
The Pick: Oregon State Beavers +20.5
