Over/Under: 8.5

After taking the opener of this four-game series Thursday night, the Dodgers go looking for more Friday night at Chavez Ravine. LA will throw a rookie making his ML debut Friday, and it’s still a heavy favorite on the MLB betting line. How do we play this game with our free MLB pick?

MLB Betting Odds

Friday’s MLB betting odds opened LA and May at around -185 over San Diego and Lauer, with an over/under of eight runs. Early betting action then dipped that line about a dime, to around -175.

The Dodgers could also be found “getting” around +100 giving the run and a half on the MLB run line.

Padres vs. Dodgers Set-Up

Los Angeles won the opener of this series Thursday night 8-2, hitting the pay window at a price of -210 with Clay Kershaw. San Diego led Thursday’s game 2-1 when the Dodgers scored five runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, then breezed home from there.

LA also covered against the MLB run line at a price of +100.

Thursday’s win made it three in a row for the Dodgers, part of a current 5-2 run. They’re also an ML-best 41-14 at home this season.

With Thursday’s loss, San Diego is 5-13 over its last 18 games.

At 72-39 overall Los Angeles now leads the NL West by 16 games over the second-place Giants. The Dodgers are also 6.5 games up on Atlanta in the battle for the best record in the National League.

Meanwhile, at 50-58 overall the Padres are just playing out the string on this season.

Los Angeles leads the season series with San Diego six games to four.

Friday’s Starting Arms

Rookie righty May will be making his ML debut Friday night. He earned the call by going 6-5 with a 3.38 and a 1.13 WHIP combined down at Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City this summer. He also struck out 110 through 106 2/3 innings in the Minors this year, against 29 walks, while allowing just five homers.

The 21-year-old was a third-round draft pick by the Dodgers back in 2016, so he’s come a long way in a relatively short time.

Southpaw Lauer is 6/19 on quality starts this year and 0 for his last two. Last Sunday he tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief against San Francisco, but over his two appearances prior to that, he gave up nine runs and 12 hits through just seven total innings in a pair of Padres losses against the Mets and Cubs.

San Diego is 9-10 with Lauer this season, 2-5 over his last seven starts.

In two starts this season against the Dodgers Lauer allowed four runs – three earned – and eight hits over 11 innings. The Padres split those two games.

The Bullpens

The Padres bullpen owns a 4.59 ERA this season and a 1.32 WHIP while allowing a .750 OPS.

The Dodgers pen owns a 4.02 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP while allowing a .696 OPS.

Free MLB Pick

Even with the rookie starting pitcher, most signs point to Los Angeles here. The Dodgers own edges in the batting splits and the bullpen comparison, and they’re just the better outfit. But the jump to the Bigs might be tough for a 21-year-old, and after all, San Diego has some ML hitters. Also, the last time the Padres were in LA, they took three of four games from the Dodgers. We see some decent MLB betting value here with San Diego at the underdog price and guys if you don’t have multiple betting accounts to shop for lines you’re potentially leaving money on the table every bet – make sure to check out our section on the top sportsbooks graded by category and start betting smarter!
