Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Jacksonville Jaguars

Friday night’s all-Florida preseason finale at EverBank Stadium has one of the cleanest reads on the entire Week 3 board, and the value is on the home team laying the small number.
The Jaguars are 2-point home favorites over the Buccaneers with a total in the 36.5 to 37.5 range. That’s a small spread that doesn’t fully reflect what happened between these two teams during their joint practices earlier this week, and it doesn’t fully reflect the storylines that are pushing Jacksonville toward a much stronger performance than the market has priced in.
Let’s start with the joint practices, because they’re the most important data point available for Friday’s game.
Tampa Bay and Jacksonville held two joint practices at the Jaguars’ Miller Electric Center on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the first day, Jacksonville dominated. Trevor Lawrence connected with wide receivers Parker Washington and Brian Thomas Jr. for major gains. The Jaguars defense forced three turnovers, including two interceptions off Baker Mayfield. Tampa Bay’s offense only reached the end zone once — a fade ball from a backup quarterback to rookie Ted Hurst.
Mayfield himself was blunt about the performance in his post-practice presser. His exact quote: “if this was a full game, I don’t think we would have come out of it on the winning side of it. So just a little eye-opener.” That’s the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers publicly admitting his team would have lost the joint practice if it had been a real game.
Day two didn’t get better for the Bucs. Mayfield’s follow-up quote after the second day of joint practice: “they out-physicald us, and that’s never what you want to have.” Tampa Bay’s offense continued to struggle against Jacksonville’s pressure. Mayfield was picked off multiple times again. The Buccaneers’ run game couldn’t establish itself. Fights broke out on the field — including a scuffle between Bucs linebacker Alex Anzalone and Jaguars offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland — with Trevor Lawrence trying to break it up.
Two full days of controlled competition, and the Jaguars won both sides of the ball convincingly.
Now the bad blood layer.
Liam Coen was Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator during their playoff run last season before leaving to take the Jaguars head coaching job. The Bucs’ fan base and, based on early joint practice reports, some of their players didn’t take that departure well. Jacksonville has additional emotional motivation to prove themselves against their new head coach’s former team. That’s the kind of extra edge that shows up in preseason games where roster spots are still being sorted out and coaching intensity matters.
The Jaguars’ defensive strengths from 2025 give another layer of confidence. Jacksonville allowed the fewest opponent rushing yards per game in the entire NFL last season and finished 8th in scoring defense. That’s the defense that just dominated Tampa Bay for two straight days, and it’s the same defense that will be on the field Friday night when the Bucs’ offense — which picked up just one first down in two drives during their Week 2 game against the Chiefs — tries to move the ball.
Todd Bowles is a proven head coach in his fourth year with the Bucs, and Tampa Bay is 2-0 in preseason. But those preseason wins came against a Jets team that lost by a touchdown and a Chiefs team that Bowles’ squad only beat by 1 (16-15) after coming back from a 9-0 deficit. Neither performance was dominant, and both were against opponents dealing with roster instability. Jacksonville is a different level of preparation and a different level of talent.
The 2-point spread is a fair number given the situational asymmetry, and getting the home team as such a small favorite in a spot where they just dominated the opposition in controlled scrimmages is exactly the kind of value spot to target.
I looked at the total too. Both teams’ offensive numbers suggest a lower-scoring game — Tampa Bay’s offense has struggled to sustain drives, and Jacksonville’s defensive strengths are exactly the kind that suppress scoring in preseason. There’s a case for the Under, but the side is where the practice data provides the clearest read.
