San Francisco is a 13.5-point home favorite over Miami with a total of 44.5. My play is the Under.

The Miami side of the total is the entry point here. Malik Willis was sacked five times in the Dolphins’ Week 1 loss to Las Vegas and finished with a 29.4 QBR. That’s the profile of a quarterback who can’t move the ball, can’t sustain drives, and can’t produce meaningful offensive output against an average defense. Now he faces the 49ers’ defensive front, which just held the Rams to seven points in a dominant Week 1 win. Nick Bosa and the San Francisco pass rush will torment Willis all afternoon, forcing three-and-outs, sacks, and turnovers that keep Miami’s points off the board.

Realistically, Miami is going to score 10-14 points in this game. That’s not pessimism — that’s the actual production ceiling of a Dolphins offense with a struggling quarterback and a rebuilding receiver group. If Willis can’t complete throws against a Raiders defense that isn’t dominant, he won’t be able to complete throws against a 49ers defense that just shut out one of the league’s best offenses through most of Week 1.

Now the Dolphins’ Under trend. Miami has hit the Under in 7 of their last 10 games. That’s a program identity — Miami plays low-scoring games because their offense doesn’t produce enough to push totals over, and their defense (while flawed) does enough to keep opposing offenses from running up the score. That trend is going to continue Sunday.

The 49ers side of the ball is more complicated for pushing the total. Kyle Shanahan’s team just returned from Australia (Melbourne is one of the most demanding travel spots in professional sports), and they have short prep time coming out of that game. Shanahan is known for measured game plans in these spots. If the 49ers build a 21-3 lead by halftime, Shanahan will call a conservative game the rest of the way, run the ball with Christian McCaffrey, and grind out the clock. That approach limits total scoring even when the 49ers are dominant.

Brock Purdy will get some production, but the 49ers won’t need to score 35+ to win this game by 13. Realistic 49ers output: 27-31 points. Miami’s output: 7-13 points. That’s a total range of 34-44. Well under 44.5.

The Over 5-1 in last 6 meetings trend is worth acknowledging, but those meetings involved different quarterbacks, different coaching staffs, and different roster configurations. The current Dolphins team is significantly worse offensively than the recent versions, and the current 49ers team is defensively better under Shanahan’s continued schemes.

Realistic outcomes: 49ers 27, Dolphins 10 (37 total); 49ers 31, Dolphins 10 (41 total); 49ers 28, Dolphins 13 (41 total); 49ers 34, Dolphins 14 (48 total, over). Three of four scenarios stay under 44.5. Only if San Francisco decides to run up the score does the total push over, and Shanahan’s coaching profile in blowouts doesn’t support that outcome.

The Pick: Dolphins/49ers Under 44.5
