Friday night’s Battle of MetLife closes out the preseason for both New York franchises, and one of the most aggressive line movements on the entire Week 3 board is pointing squarely at value on the home team.
The Jets are 1.5-point home favorites over the Giants with a total in the low 30s. That current number would be unremarkable if not for where the line opened. Big Blue opened at -3 as favorites early in the week. Since then, sharp money has moved the number a full 4.5 points toward the Jets — from Giants -3 all the way to Jets -1.5. That’s one of the biggest preseason line moves you’ll see, and once you look at what each team has actually done in preseason and how the coaching setup works, the reasoning becomes clear.
Let’s start with Geno Smith.
The Jets acquired Smith from the Raiders this offseason and named him their starter. Aaron Glenn, entering his second year as Jets head coach, has taken a smart approach in preseason — one meaningful possession for Smith per game, treating it like a live scrimmage rep. In Week 2 against the Steelers, Smith made his single possession count. He went 7-for-7 for 65 yards on a 10-play, 69-yard touchdown drive to open the game. The Jets won 17-0 as 1.5-point favorites in Pittsburgh — the Steelers were shut out in a home game they were expected to keep close. Smith looked sharp, decisive, and completely comfortable running Aaron Glenn’s offense.
If Smith gets even one series Friday night against the Giants, the Jets are getting a meaningful offensive contribution from an experienced veteran quarterback who’s been operating in the same offense for months.
On the Giants side, John Harbaugh is coaching his first Battle of MetLife as an NFL head coach with a new organization. Harbaugh’s Giants are 1-1 in preseason, but the Week 1 loss to the Vikings was a 13-10 defensive-heavy affair where Jaxson Dart played two series and struggled to move the ball. In Week 2, Dart sat entirely, and backup Jameis Winston led the Giants to a 26-3 win over the Dolphins. That’s a solid preseason performance, but the offense was largely driven by Winston, not Dart.
Harbaugh indicated earlier this week that “a few starters might see action Friday night,” but nothing definitive about the extent. When a first-year head coach in a new organization hedges on preseason usage this late in the process, you typically get the more conservative side of the ledger — meaning fewer starter snaps than expected, and a game that gets decided by backup rotations.
That plays into the Jets’ favor. Aaron Glenn has a clearer plan for how his starters get their reps. The Jets’ backup rotation has demonstrated it can hold up in preseason play — they shut out the Steelers 17-0 in Week 2, which required backup defensive players to sustain that scoreless streak through multiple quarters after Smith and the starters exited.
The Jets are also playing at MetLife Stadium as the designated home team. Even in a shared-stadium rivalry, home crowd energy matters at the margins in preseason games where roster spots are being decided. Jets fans will show up for this final tune-up, and that energy typically shows up on the field.
The historical piece is worth flagging too. Jets fans have owned this rivalry recently — they won the last regular season meeting 13-10 at MetLife in Week 8 of the 2023 season, and Big Blue hasn’t beaten Gang Green in a regular season game since December 24, 2011. That’s a 15-year drought against their MetLife neighbors in games that count. While preseason is a different animal, the organizational familiarity and cultural momentum around this matchup have been on the Jets’ side for over a decade.
I looked at the total too. Both teams’ Week 2 games featured strong defensive performances — the Jets shut out the Steelers 17-0 and the Giants held the Dolphins to 3 points. That backs up an Under lean, and there’s a case for it. But the side has the clearer signal given how aggressively the market has moved toward the Jets.
