The New Orleans Saints take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. The Steelers are coming off the bye last week, hoping they found some answers after a rough 2-6 start to their season. In their last game, they dropped a 35-13 affair to the Eagles. Dug in at home, they take on a Saints team coming to a bit of an out-of-context setting following a 27-13 loss at home on MNF to the Ravens. Which team can lend a little success to an otherwise sagging season this week in Pittsburgh?

Are the Steelers Underrated?

On one hand, we see a 2-6 team not really going anywhere. There are personnel issues that are too numerous to describe. A lot of what they had on defense has been compromised, leaving them as one of the more-exploitable units in the league. On offense, the prognosis is bleak. Rookie QB Kenny Pickett hasn’t shown much. RB Najee Harris seems to almost vanish in this offense. Now with Chase Claypool traded, their offense is consolidated more. In reality, they could afford that personnel loss as there is too much offensive talent for the minuscule production they’re able to create, as George Pickens, Diontae Johnson, Pat Freiermuth, and Harris are often just out there taking up space.

It’s just that many seem to regard the Steelers as being in the running for the worst team in the league. Their flailing offense, won-loss record, and shattered roster speak toward that maybe being true, while the results do not. There was a bad clunker against Cleveland and a few bad losses to teams out of their league in Buffalo and then Philly in their last game. But as they prepare to face a highly-imperfect Saints team, maybe we should be looking at how they beat the Bengals and Bucs while giving the Patriots, Jets, and Dolphins good close games. At home and rested against a dicey team coming off the short week just might set forth the kinds of conditions where even a 2-6 team like the Steelers can thrive.

How the Steelers Can Shine

For all their issues on defense between their poor play and the dealing with injuries, they can still make some good things happen. Halfway respectable against the run, that’s a good trait to have against this Saints team and Alvin Kamara. With the bye, there was also a little extra time for some guys on “D” to file back into rotation. While getting some pass-rush from Alex Highsmith has been helpful, getting TJ Watt (questionable) back would be big. The Saints have been struggling with QB play all season, and the kind of playmaking this Pittsburgh defense sometimes offer could go a long way this week. With guys like Minkah Fitzpatrick in the secondary, they may not have held up well against the more-aerial teams they’ve faced this season, but they’re not facing that this week.

It seems like the Saints’ defense is still getting some residual effect from their 2021 form when they were actually a really good defense. This season sees them rating out a lot worse. The last few weeks have been moderately better, including the shutout of the Raiders a few weeks back, but leading up to that, they had gone three solid games where they were getting completely throttled. It just offers a little hope to a Pittsburgh offense that has had little to celebrate this season.

Bounce Back for the Saints?

So far this season, we’ve seen some different incarnations of the Saints. They can be the struggling offense that can’t move the ball that we saw on Monday Night Football or a vital offense that can put up numbers with Alvin Kamara and rookie receiver Chris Olave. But the anticipated contributions of Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry never really came to pass, Jameis Winston is dealing with health issues as they’re stuck with Dalton behind center, and injuries have really sucked them dry on both sides of the ball. The offense is reduced to putting forth the occasional explosion on a given week, while the defense struggles with key pieces, always seemingly out of action or questionable.

At the same time, a look at who the Saints have been playing lately reveals a list of pretty competent teams. Against more-sideways teams like the Steelers, we’ve seen better results. After losing to the Ravens, Bengals, and Vikings, it’s easy to low-rate a team like this. But then you look at the team that shut out the Raiders and beat division-leading Seattle while taking once-beaten Minnesota to overtime, we see a team that can surface on a given week with a wide range of form on both sides of the ball. Is it so crazy to think the better version of what they do surfaces against a 2-win Pittsburgh team?

Take the Road Team

This might be a good “buy low” spot for the Saints, with public opinion pretty low after a lopsided defeat to the Ravens on MNF. Conversely, the Steelers are more out of mind following a bye and some forgettable games that went by without a ton of notice. I don’t rule out the possibility that the time off gave head coach Mike Tomlin a chance to find some answers with the Steelers, but I’d say a medium version of what the Saints have been this season might be enough. They’re dealing with a lot of things, coming off the short week, and will be in a bit of a foreign stadium, but I see the Saints covering the spread on Sunday.
