NEW YORK GIANTS AND DETROIT LIONS MATCHUP:

This Sunday in Detroit, the New York Giants will head into Ford Field to take on the Lions in an NFC matchup between two teams that both desperately need to get a win under their belt. The Giants are sitting in 3rd place in the NFC East thanks to an even worse Washington Redskins team, while the Lions are in dead last in the NFC North. Both teams have lost three straight and are in need of a win in a big way this Sunday. The Lions come in as a six-point favorite at home against the Giants. This season against the spread, the Giants are 2-5 while the Lions are 4-2.

HOW THE PUBLIC IS BETTING NEW YORK AND DETROIT:

As of Wednesday afternoon, about 55% of the public action was in Detroit to get the cover at home against the Giants. 45% likes the points being given to New York. Initially, when I saw the line, I too wanted New York plus the six, but as I dug deeper, I realized that this Detroit team is just not a good matchup for the G-Men. In my eyes, the Lions are a much better team than their record shows, and they have also had a pretty tough schedule so far this season. With that said, I really like Detroit at home minus the points.

WHY THE DETROIT LIONS WILL COVER ON SUNDAY AGAINST THE GIANTS:

I know, I know…the old saying, “you are what your record says you are.” I agree, but I also think this Lions team is better than their record. They started the season with a tie against Arizona, and then they won two straight against the Chargers and the Eagles. It appeared the Lions were hitting a stride. Well, after winning those two games, they have now dropped their last three. Yes, that sounds awful, but if you look at it, they are not that bad. They hung in with the Kansas City Chiefs losing by a score of 34-30. They then went on the road and led the Green Bay Packers the ENTIRE GAME until Mason Crosby hit a field goal with no time left on the clock to give the Packers a one-point win. Last week’s game against Minnesota was not all that great, but the point is, Detroit is a play or two away from being 4-1-1 rather than 1-3-1.I

As for the New York Giants, they are just not good. Rookie Quarterback, Daniel Jones, does show lots of promise, but the Giants as a whole have a lot of work and rebuilding to do. Through seven games, New York is only scoring about 18 points a game while the defense is allowing almost 27 a contest. Not good. This matchup with Detroit will be tough, seeing as how the Lions average nearly 25 a game. The Lions defense has been known to give up some points so far this year, but that is against guys like Mahomes, Rogers, and Rivers….not Daniel Jones. Not a knock on Jones, he shows promise, but he is not there yet. I do think New York will put up some points, but in the end, Matthew Stafford and company will pull away late in the third quarter.

HOW THE GIANTS AND LIONS GAME WILL PLAY OUT COME SUNDAY:

First and foremost, bet the over in this one. I can see this game being played somewhere in the 20-14 area in the first half only to keep the scoring going in the second half. New York will probably come out of the gate, making some plays early to score with Detroit, but as the second half unfolds, the Lions will be just too much for New York. Detroit will make some big plays behind the arm of Matthew Stafford on their way to a 35-24 win over the Giants. Stafford this season has thrown 13 touchdowns and three interceptions, and I can see him adding three more touchdowns this Sunday. I like Stafford to finish with a big day with 300+ yards passing and three scores with no picks against the Giants defense. Stafford will get player of the game, and the Lions will get themselves back on the winning track this Sunday. The Giants are just not ready to win a shootout with a team like Detroit…not yet.

Bob’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: Take the Detroit Lions minus the six points at home over the New York Giants.
