Green Bay Packers at New York Jets

Green Bay is a 4.5-point road favorite over the Jets with a total of 44.5. My play is the Over.
The total is the entry point here. It opened at 42.5 and has climbed all the way up to 44.5. That’s a two-point move in the Over direction — significant preseason action indicating both public and sharp money see this game producing more scoring than the initial number suggested. When a total moves that consistently upward, the market is telling us the initial line missed something specific about how these teams project to play.
Both teams’ recent trends support the Over. Green Bay has hit the Over in 7 of their last 10 games. The Jets have hit the Over in 6 of their last 10. That’s a combined 13-of-20 (65%) Over rate across both franchises’ recent games. When two teams with strong Over tendencies face each other, the compound effect typically shows up in the actual final score.
Now consider what happened in Week 1. Green Bay played a wild game against Minnesota. The Packers built a 22-10 lead in the second half before Minnesota scored 29 unanswered points to close the game out 39-22. That’s a combined 61 total points. Jordan Love was sacked four times and turned the ball over twice, but the offense still moved the ball at a high rate. Now Green Bay comes back a week later against a Jets team that isn’t nearly as good on defense as Minnesota.
The Jets were solid in their 23-10 road win over Tennessee — a game where they suppressed the Titans’ offense effectively. But playing at home in their season opener with a new head coach and building confidence is a different setup than what they’ll face against Green Bay’s more explosive offensive attack. Green Bay isn’t going to gift them the same limited possessions and short fields the Titans provided.
Jordan Love needs a bounce-back game. His two-turnover Week 1 performance was uncharacteristic, and a big early season game at MetLife is exactly the kind of setup where quarterbacks push for splashy performances. Love has legitimate weapons in Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Tucker Kraft. Even without Josh Jacobs (still on the Commissioner’s Exempt List) and Micah Parsons (still on PUP), Green Bay’s offense should produce 24-28 points against a Jets defense that isn’t at Minnesota’s caliber.
On the other side, the Jets have real offensive weapons of their own. Breece Hall is one of the better running backs in the AFC and the Jets’ offense has enough passing threats to sustain drives. In their Week 1 win, they scored 23 points against a Titans defense that’s solid — that pace should hold up against Green Bay’s defense, which just gave up 39 points in Minnesota.
Realistic outcomes: Packers 27, Jets 20 (47 total); Packers 30, Jets 24 (54 total); Packers 24, Jets 21 (45 total); or Jets 24, Packers 20 in an upset (44 total). Three of four scenarios hit the Over. Only a low-scoring defensive slugfest keeps the total under 44.5, which contradicts the recent trends and the market’s Over-directional movement.
