Chicago is a 5.5-point home favorite over Minnesota with a total of 49.5. My play is the Vikings getting the points.

The line movement is the entry point. This game opened at Bears -3.5 and has moved all the way to -5.5. The total swung from 45.5 all the way up to 49.5. That’s a public and market overreaction to Chicago’s 59-37 Week 1 explosion against Carolina. Yes, the Bears put up 552 yards and 59 points. But that game happened against a Panthers defense with roughly 40% of its offensive line unavailable and multiple starting defenders limited. Those numbers won’t translate directly against a much stiffer Vikings defense.

Minnesota won its Week 1 game 39-22 over Green Bay in a game where their own defense showed dominance. The Vikings blitzed at the highest clip in the NFL in 2025 and continued that aggression against Jordan Love, generating multiple sacks and forcing turnovers. Now they face Caleb Williams, who is talented but is also known for holding the ball too long and struggling under sustained pressure. That specific matchup — Vikings pass rush vs. Williams’s protection issues — creates a real ceiling on Chicago’s offensive production.

The Vikings quarterback situation is the biggest question mark, but it’s also not as scary as the market suggests. Kyler Murray suffered a concussion in his Vikings debut in Week 1, and his status for Week 2 is uncertain. Carson Wentz took over and led Minnesota to a 39-22 win over the Packers. If Wentz starts again, that’s actually not a downgrade for keeping this game close. Wentz has been 3-3 as a Vikings starter since 2025, and he’s a competent NFL quarterback who doesn’t make catastrophic mistakes when he’s in a rhythm. He can manage a game and hit Justin Jefferson downfield when the coverage allows it.

Divisional NFC North games have consistently played closer than the market prices in. Both teams know each other, both coaches game-plan aggressively for these matchups, and turnovers become less likely because both offenses have familiarity with the opposing coverages. That closeness translates directly to underdog covers on smaller spreads.

Ben Johnson’s Bears also have a specific pattern from 2025 that’s worth remembering — they were 4-2 against the spread as home favorites but they weren’t laying big numbers in those games. Now they’re being asked to lay 5.5 against a divisional rival that just won its own game convincingly. That’s a step up in class from most of the home favorite covers they had last year.

Realistic outcomes: Bears 27, Vikings 24 (3-point margin, Vikings cover +5.5); Bears 24, Vikings 20 (4-point margin, Vikings cover); Bears 28, Vikings 24 (4-point margin, Vikings cover); or Bears 34, Vikings 20 (14-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for the Vikings. Only if Chicago runs up the score like they did against Carolina does the +5.5 lose, and the Vikings’ defensive setup specifically prevents that scenario from repeating.
