What Did We Learn From Last Weekend?

Every squirrel finds a nut at least once in their life! For Bubba, he found the bricks at the end of the Indy race and took the coveted checkered flag this past weekend. It didn’t come without some hiccups, include two overtime restarts and a rain shower, causing fuel to be at the forefront of everyone’s radar. For Wallace, it was a welcome win for his first in 100 starts since 2022.

William Byron was one of those guys who was disappointed by the fuel strategy train. He was third on the restart but ran out of fuel on the final lap. That leaves him second to teammate Elliott in the standings. Kyle Larson held the runner-up finish for the race, followed by Denny Hamlin, Ryan Preece, and Brad Keselowski to round out the top 5 spots. Todd Gilliland had one of his greatest finishes, coming home in 6th place. Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell, Alex Bowman, and Carson Hocevar finished out the top 10. For NASCAR’s interesting stunt of a mid-season summer challenge, Ty Gibbs beat out Ty Dillon for the $1 million prize. Gibbs finished 21st. Dillon finished 28th. And that pretty much sums up that excitement.

Where Are We Headed This Weekend?

Back to normalcy, this weekend the drivers and teams are headed to Iowa for the Iowa Corn 350. This asphalt track is 0.875 miles with 12-14 degrees of banking in the turns, 10 degrees on the front stretch, and 4 degrees on the backstretch. Iowa is a short track at heart. It’s a little different than Richmond with the banking in the turns, causing more opportunities for passing and drivers bunching together. Tire wear is more of a consideration than the flatter tracks, but it remains to be seen exactly how this track will continue to handle with just one Cup Series race under its belt.

Odds and Value Picks

With just one race to gauge our drivers on, we have to look at similar tracks. That leaves a lot to be desired because this track is pretty unique in its own right. Let’s take a look at potential winners as we head into just the second race of this track’s history with the NASCAR Cup Series drivers:

Winner: Kyle Larson (+500)

Larson is in a 3 way tie for potential to win, along with Denny Hamlin and last year’s winner, Ryan Blaney. Larson is coming off a second-place finish at Indy with some great short-track history. Larson is competitive enough on any track that newness means nothing. That gives him the advantage. Look for Larson to be the one to beat on Sunday.

Mid-Range Pick: Brad Keselowski (+2500)

Keselowski finished 10th here last year with 5 laps led. He had a top 5 finish last weekend at Indy, and he’s looking for the elusive win this season. Keselowski is going to get more aggressive as the weekends wind down. This is one of his best remaining shots to secure a victory.

Dark Horse: Josh Berry

In his #21 Wood Brothers Ford, Berry is hoping for his best finish of the season in his second start here at Iowa. Last year, Berry led 32 laps. That wasn’t happenstance. He’s got the talent. He just needs to execute. Look for Berry to work hard at getting to the front and trying to earn that checkered flag. He needs a win to get to the playoffs. It’s now or never.
