Miami is a 53.5-point home favorite over Florida A&M with a total sitting at 60.5. Laying 53.5 in any game is a tough spot, and this one has its own complications. The play here is the Over.

Look at what Miami did last Friday. Darian Mensah made his debut as a Hurricane by going 27-of-30 for 401 yards and 5 touchdowns in less than three quarters of work. Miami beat Stanford 45-6 on the road and covered a 24.5-point spread by 14.5 points. Mensah set a Miami single-game passing record and is now the outright Heisman Trophy favorite at +550. Malachi Toney had 234 yards and 3 touchdowns.

That’s the Miami offense heading into a home game against an FCS opponent that has scored 33 total points across its first two games this year. Florida A&M’s offense hasn’t gotten anything going. They put up 20 in an opener against Norfolk State and 13 in a loss to South Carolina State. Their previous four meetings with Miami have produced 19 total points from the Rattlers combined. Not per game — combined.

Miami scored at a rate of roughly 15 points per quarter against Stanford before Cristobal started emptying the bench. Extrapolate that even conservatively across a full game against a weaker opponent, and Miami gets to 45 with starters, then adds 10-20 more with backups against overmatched FCS defenders. A 55-60 point Miami output is very much on the table. Historically, Miami has held FAMU to 5 points per meeting on average, so the Rattlers likely put up 3-10 points at best.

That math gets us to 58-70 combined points. Right around the total or comfortably over.

Cristobal has motivation to keep the foot on the accelerator too. Miami plays at Wake Forest next Thursday and then hosts Florida State three weeks later. Building offensive rhythm and getting Mensah reps against a lower-pressure opponent is exactly what a coach wants heading into ACC play. This isn’t a spot where Miami is trying to pull starters in the first half. This is a spot where Mensah plays into the third quarter, the offense stays aggressive, and the scoreboard keeps ticking up until the game gets absurd.

The spread angle has a real concern with backup performance in the fourth quarter — 53.5 is close to Miami’s ceiling. But the total doesn’t need starters. Miami’s backup offense last week added scores after Mensah exited, and against Florida A&M’s defense, Miami’s second and third string can keep scoring even without breaking a sweat.
