Las Vegas is a 3.5-point home favorite over Miami with a total of 40.5. My play is the Dolphins getting the points.
The head-to-head number is where I start. The Dolphins are 7-2-1 against the spread in their last 10 meetings with the Raiders. That’s a specific matchup where Miami has consistently played better than the market expects, regardless of roster changes or coaching turnover on either side. Ten games is a legitimate sample size, and when a spread pattern holds up that reliably against different personnel groups, there’s a stylistic reason. Miami’s speed on offense and Las Vegas’s inconsistency on defense create matchup problems that the market repeatedly underprices.
Kirk Cousins gets the start for Las Vegas. That’s Klint Kubiak’s decision — the Raiders drafted Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick this year but named Cousins as their Week 1 starter. That decision alone tells you something about where Mendoza’s readiness sits. But it also puts Cousins on the field, and Cousins has real limitations. He’s got no mobility, his pocket presence has slipped since his Achilles injury, and he ranked among the least efficient starting quarterbacks in the league last year. Miami’s defense — even with Zach Sieler, Jordyn Brooks, and Lonnie Johnson Jr. all listed as questionable — has enough tools to make Cousins uncomfortable.

Malik Willis takes over as the Dolphins’ starter after Miami parted ways with Tua Tagovailoa this offseason. Willis has been developing for a couple of years and now gets his real chance to prove he can be a franchise piece. He’s a mobile, athletic quarterback whose skill set fits Jeff Hafley’s approach — establish the run, protect the QB, and let De’Von Achane do the heavy lifting on the ground. That’s actually a good matchup profile against a Raiders defense that struggled against elite backs last year.

Achane is the key. He rushed for 1,350 yards last season and has home-run speed. When he’s healthy and Miami commits to feeding him, he’s one of the most explosive players in football. Against a Raiders front seven that hasn’t shown it can consistently stop the run, Achane could produce 100+ yards on the ground and shift possession clock in Miami’s favor.
Jeff Hafley is a first-time head coach installing a new system, which is a concern. But he’s been a defensive coordinator for a long time and knows how to prepare a defense for a specific opponent. Kirk Cousins is the exact kind of quarterback Hafley knows how to attack.
The market has installed the Raiders as favorites based on home field, Cousins’s veteran experience, and Miami’s roster questions. But the specific matchup has always favored Miami — and the current 3.5-point line doesn’t fully account for how consistently the Dolphins have covered against Las Vegas.
Realistic outcomes: Raiders 21, Dolphins 20 (Miami covers +3.5); or Raiders 23, Dolphins 21 (Miami covers by half a point); or a straight-up Miami upset with Achane going off.
