Ole Miss is a 47.5-point home favorite over Charlotte with a total of 61.5. My play is Charlotte getting the massive number of points.

The setup for Ole Miss this week is worth examining carefully. Trinidad Chambliss and the Rebels just survived a 41-38 walk-off win over Louisville in Nashville. That was a nationally competitive game against a legitimate ACC opponent, and Ole Miss’s defense gave up 38 points and 469 yards. That’s not a dominant defensive performance — that’s a defense that let the game stay competitive until the final drive. Pete Golding’s first full season is off to a shaky start on that side of the ball.

Now the schedule catches up. Charlotte is the sandwich game between Louisville and LSU. Ole Miss travels to Baton Rouge next Saturday for a top-15 SEC matchup that could decide the Rebels’ College Football Playoff hopes. Coaches in sandwich spots don’t run up the score. They protect starters. They pull key players in the second half. They play conservative in the fourth quarter because the real game is seven days away.

Add in that Kewan Lacy, Ole Miss’s leading rusher from Week 1, is banged up. The Rebels’ offensive attack loses some of its explosiveness when their primary running back isn’t at full strength. Chambliss can still throw for 300+ yards, but sustained scoring requires a healthy ground game, and that’s compromised heading into Saturday.

Charlotte, meanwhile, brings some real firepower. Their offense produced 538 total yards and 322 passing yards in a triple-overtime loss to The Citadel. Yes, they lost to an FCS opponent, but scoring 41 points in a game — even in a triple-overtime loss — shows the offense can move the ball. Against Ole Miss’s defense that just allowed 469 yards last week, Charlotte should be able to hit 20-24 points without much trouble.

The historical trends support the play too. Ole Miss is 22-1 straight up at home in their last 23 games, but they’ve only covered 6 of the last 7 September home games against non-AP-ranked teams. Winning outright and covering by nearly 50 points are two very different things. When Ole Miss is a massive favorite and plays a sandwich game, backdoor covers are common because the coaching staff pulls starters and slows down the offense.

Charlotte’s own ATS record on the road is strong. They’re 4-0 against the spread in their last 4 away games. The road team has covered the spread in 9 of Charlotte’s last 10 games. That’s a program that plays with a chip on their shoulder as an underdog and covers regardless of the number.

Realistic outcomes: Ole Miss 52, Charlotte 24 (28-point margin, Charlotte covers +47.5); Ole Miss 45, Charlotte 20 (25-point margin, Charlotte covers); Ole Miss 55, Charlotte 17 (38-point margin, Charlotte covers by 9.5); or Ole Miss 63, Charlotte 10 (53-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover. Only a monster Ole Miss blowout loses the ticket, and that’s specifically the game script Pete Golding avoids with LSU on deck.

The Pick: Charlotte 49ers +47.5
