Kentucky Wildcats and Tennessee Volunteers helmets facing off at midfield of Neyland Stadium in Knoxville at night

Tennessee is a 6.5-point favorite with a total of 50.5. My play is Under 50.5 (-110).

Nobody in Knoxville will tell you who’s playing quarterback on Saturday, and that’s the whole story here. Josh Heupel still won’t name a starter, though reports have George MacIntyre getting the ball again. When a Heupel team is keeping its quarterback a secret in November, you’re not getting a track meet. You’re getting DeSean Bishop 30 times and a whole lot of running clock.

The Heupel offense has turned into a grind-it-out operation

This isn’t the Tennessee that used to hang 50 on people. The Vols haven’t scored more than 26 points in any of their five SEC games: 17 against Texas, 24 against Auburn, 24 at Arkansas, 26 against Alabama and 24 at South Carolina. Those five games finished with totals of 37, 38, 41, 36 and 51. One of five gets past this number, and that one only got to 51.

MacIntyre has started the last three games and thrown two touchdowns against three picks. Faizon Brandon started the first five before getting sacked 10 times by Texas and then hurt against Auburn. Whoever takes the snaps, the plan is obvious. Bishop, a former walk-on, leads all power conference backs with 957 rushing yards, and Will Stein said it plainly this week: “This 18 is the real deal.” Bishop is coming off a right ankle injury, and Heupel expects him to play. A healthy Bishop means long drives. A limited Bishop means fewer points. Either way, that’s good for the Under.

Jim Knowles’ defense is the best unit on the field

Tennessee gives up just 16.3 points per game. By Stein’s count, they’re No. 1 in sacks and No. 2 in tackles for loss. They have 35 sacks, and Xavier Gilliam alone has 11.5 tackles for loss. What makes this defense dangerous isn’t just blitzing. It doesn’t give up the cheap big play. Stein described Knowles as “very aggressive in his approach. Yet, he’s not chaotic,” and the numbers back him up. The Vols are top 20 nationally in points allowed per drive and yards per play, and they’ve missed only 31 tackles, second fewest in the SEC.

That’s a tough matchup for a Kentucky offense that wins by staying on schedule. The Wildcats lead the SEC by gaining ground on 52.4 percent of their early downs, but they convert only 33.7 percent of their third downs and have given up 16 sacks. Kenny Minchey has been careful (14 touchdowns, one interception), and careful is a good way to survive Neyland. It isn’t how you hit 30.

Kentucky wins ugly, and it wins clean

Stein’s first team is 7-1 and a perfect 3-0 on the road, and those road wins had a theme. They beat Texas A&M 31-21, survived South Carolina 35-34 in overtime, and ground out a 21-13 win at Oklahoma. The Wildcats have only 36 penalties and haven’t turned the ball over in more than a month. Neither team is likely to hand the other a short field, and that matters against a total this high. Both teams are also coming off a bye, so there’s no rust excuse and no fatigue factor. Expect two well-prepared defenses.

How Bishop and a few overtimes could bust this

I’ll be honest about what scares me. Kentucky’s defense is ordinary, sitting 40th in SP+ and giving up 24.8 points a game. If Bishop is fully healthy, Tennessee could top 30 just by running. Five of Kentucky’s six SEC games went past 50, two of them in overtime, and overtime is the Under’s worst enemy. A MacIntyre interception deep in Tennessee territory could hand Kentucky a short field and a cheap touchdown. And Stein’s Oregon offenses averaged 27 points per game against Knowles defenses in their past meetings. None of that changes my read of how this game will be played: lots of running and lots of punting.

Projected score: Tennessee 24, Kentucky 17
