Iowa at Northwestern

7:30 PM ET, Ryan Field
Northwestern is a 2.5-point favorite with a total of 45.5, and my play is Iowa +2.5.
Only two teams have hung 20 points on Iowa this year. One was Ohio State. The other was Washington, and 21 of its 24 came in garbage time of a 41-24 Hawkeyes rout. That’s the wall Chip Kelly’s offense runs into Saturday night, and I don’t think a field goal’s worth of points prices it right.
Ferentz vs. Kelly is the whole show. Northwestern has been a different animal with Kelly running the offense. By the down-to-down efficiency numbers they’re a top-10 offense in the country, and Aidan Chiles has thrown 13 touchdowns against one interception. Kirk Ferentz called Kelly “just a brilliant football coach” this week, and he meant it. But Iowa’s defense is the kind that doesn’t care how clever the formation is. It’s the fourth-best scoring defense in the country, and it gives up just 79 rushing yards a game. Northwestern wants to run for 200. Good luck.
Iowa is the better team by the yard. Here’s the number I keep coming back to. Iowa gains 6.1 yards per play and allows 4.4. Northwestern gains 6.7 and allows 5.5. Do the math and the Hawkeyes own the bigger gap, by a healthy margin. The Northwestern defense ranks in the bottom half of the country at getting off the field, and it’s banged up. Safety Robert Fitzgerald, corner Josh Fussell and defensive tackle Brendan Flakes have all missed multiple weeks, and safety Jon Jon Stevens Jr. left the Oregon game on a cart after a scary hit. David Braun is letting the availability report “speak for itself.” That’s rarely good news.

Hank Brown finally looks like the guy. Iowa’s offense isn’t pretty, but it showed a pulse last week. Brown completed 20 of 24 passes with two touchdowns in a 30-0 beatdown of Wisconsin and picked up Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. Ferentz double-listed his quarterbacks on the depth chart, but he was clear: “Right now he’s our starter.” Kamari Moulton is churning out 6.3 yards a carry, and Iowa’s special teams are, as always, a hidden yardage machine. Braun admitted as much: “We haven’t even mentioned their special teams.”
Northwestern’s hot streak has some air in it. The Wildcats are +1.3 in turnovers per game, sixth-best nationally. That’s great, and it’s also the stat most likely to cool off against a defense this disciplined. They also just blew a 20-6 lead at Oregon and got outscored 28-6 the rest of the way. Braun’s own read: “I think we got tight.” Iowa has won the last four meetings, and six of the last nine were decided by a touchdown or less. This is a series built for the team catching points.
What could sink the Hawkeyes
I’m not pretending this is a layup. Northwestern is unbeaten at the new Ryan Field and has won 10 straight true home games, and it’s 4-1 against the spread at home. Iowa’s interior offensive line is a M*A*S*H unit. Starting interior lineman Cael Winter is unlikely to play, and two more interior linemen are out about six weeks. Ferentz said “a high number of guys” aren’t practicing. If Braydon Brus and that front win the trenches, Iowa’s offense could stall out. And Iowa is a poor second-half scoring team, which means it rarely pulls away. If this ends 20-17 Northwestern, I’ll tip my cap to Kelly.
But I’ll trust the defense that has held six of its eight opponents under 20 points, and I’ll happily take the points with it.
Projected score: Iowa 21, Northwestern 17
The Pick: Iowa +2.5
