The Brewers are home favorites at -164 in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Padres at American Family Field, with Milwaukee leading the series 1-0. San Diego is available at +125 or better on the moneyline. The total is 7. My play is the Padres ML at +135.

Michael King is where this pick starts. The right-hander went 12-10 with a 3.21 ERA and 159 strikeouts in the regular season, and he’s been even better in October, with a 2.05 career postseason ERA. In his last outing, Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the Cubs, King carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of an 8-0 win. That’s the type of pitcher you want on the mound when your team is trying to avoid going down 0-2.

Game 1 was a one-run game that San Diego could have won. The Padres jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning and knocked Jacob Misiorowski out early, and the game was tied until William Contreras hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh. Trevor Megill needed four outs to close it. The Padres went toe-to-toe with the best record in baseball and the likely Cy Young winner, and lost by a run.

Logan Henderson is a legitimate starter, but this is a big ask. The 24-year-old rookie posted a 2.47 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 23 starts, and he has never allowed more than three runs in a start, tying Zac Gallen for the longest such streak since 1893. But he’s making his postseason debut after not pitching competitively since September 23. That’s 11 days off for a young pitcher heading into his first October start, against a Padres lineup led by Fernando Tatis Jr. (.289, 25 homers) and Manny Machado (30 homers, 91 RBIs). San Diego went 34-14 this season when it hit multiple homers, and it can win this game with one swing.

The bullpen situation also favors San Diego. Both bullpens worked in Game 1, but Mason Miller hasn’t pitched in the series yet. He finished the regular season with 38 saves and a 1.67 ERA, and he gives the Padres a fresh, dominant closer if King can hand over a lead. Milwaukee leaned on Megill for four outs on Saturday, and if Henderson can’t go deep, the Brewers will be digging into a bullpen that already worked hard to cover Misiorowski’s short outing.

The risk is Milwaukee’s home field. The Brewers went 55-26 at American Family Field, led the majors with a .259 team batting average, and went 9-1 over their final 10 regular-season games. San Diego was just 40-41 on the road. But this is a pitching matchup that favors the more experienced arm, and the Padres are in a must-win spot with their best reliever rested.

Realistic outcomes: Padres 4, Brewers 2 (Padres win); Padres 3, Brewers 2 (Padres win); Brewers 4, Padres 3 (Brewers win); or Brewers 5, Padres 3 (Brewers win). This game is closer to a coin flip than the price suggests, and plus money on San Diego is the value side.
