Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts

The Colts are 7-point home favorites with a total of 44. My play is Titans +7.
Indianapolis just got punched in the mouth in Pittsburgh, and the market’s answer is to make them a full touchdown choice against the only winless team left in the AFC. That number smells like Survivor tickets and a 0-5 record, not like a defense that can actually put this game away.
Indy’s defense invites company
Here’s the part the line is ignoring. The Colts are giving up 27.6 points per game — 27th in the league — and opposing offenses are chewing them up at 6.2 yards per play. Their defensive expected-points number (how many points each snap adds or subtracts) ranks 27th. Soft is the polite word.
Tennessee’s offense is legitimately terrible. Cam Ward is completing about 63 percent with three touchdowns and three picks through five games, the Titans average 11.6 points a night, and they put up three last week. Nobody is confusing this unit with a playoff attack. But even a broken offense finds daylight against a defense this generous, and Ward has one thing going for him that the spread doesn’t price: the Titans still play defense.
Tennessee allows just 21.8 points per game, 10th in the NFL. That profile — awful offense, competent defense — is how you lose by a field goal a lot more often than you lose by two touchdowns. Robert Saleh’s group has been winless, not helpless.

Where the number came from. This line opened Colts -3.5. It has ballooned to -7. TeamRankings’ predictive ratings still only have Indianapolis about six points better than Tennessee before you add home-field. Slap on the usual couple of points for Lucas Oil and you’re looking at a true number around eight — which means -7 is already asking you to bet that Indy plays a clean, professional game after a sloppy 34-22 loss. Daniel Jones threw for 267 yards without a touchdown in that one. Jonathan Taylor managed 45 yards on 15 carries. Those aren’t “cover by a touchdown every week” vibes.
The Colts do finish drives better when they get there — 66.7 percent red-zone scoring rate versus Tennessee’s 46 percent — and Taylor remains the best player on either sideline. That is why Indianapolis should win the game. It is not why they should win it by eight or more against a division rival whose defense keeps scoreboards honest.
What could go wrong
If Ward’s offense stays stuck in the mud and Tennessee puts up another single-digit scoring day, the Colts cover in their sleep. Safety Amani Hooker is out with a concussion, which opens soft spots for Josh Downs and Keenan Allen if Allen is active. And any late Taylor touchdown turns a one-score game into a cover. Divisional dogs also have a habit of hanging around until they don’t.
Projected score: Colts 24, Titans 17.
