Chicago Bears at Atlanta Falcons

The Chicago Bears are 3-point road favorites over the Atlanta Falcons, and the total is 49.5. My play is Falcons +3.
Two banged-up quarterbacks, one line move, and a market that has decided Caleb Williams’ hamstring matters more than Michael Penix Jr.’s ribs. I think the market has it backwards. The Falcons have been a completely different football team whenever Penix is upright, and the Bears’ defense just got thinner in the worst possible spot.
Atlanta with Penix is a different animal. With third-stringer Cooper Rush starting the first two weeks, the Falcons scored 16 points combined. Penix came back from ACL surgery in Week 3, and Atlanta dropped a league-high 80 points over his first two games, routing Green Bay and New Orleans on the road. He had them in a tie game against Baltimore last Sunday night before a Tavius Robinson sack injured his ribs and sent Tua Tagovailoa in for overtime. Sources told ESPN the rib injury isn’t considered serious, and The Athletic reports Atlanta is optimistic he plays. This is a pick on Penix starting, and that’s the way the reports are leaning.
Chicago’s secondary has been a welcome mat. The Bears allow 8.3 yards per pass attempt, second-worst in the NFL per TeamRankings. ESPN’s Bears beat writer flagged that passes thrown at Jaylon Johnson are being caught 77.3% of the time, and Tyrique Stevenson Sr. is questionable with a hamstring after allowing a 140.7 passer rating in coverage. That’s a buffet for Drake London, Atlanta’s leading receiver. It gets worse up front, too: Montez Sweat was just suspended two games for a PED violation, and Dayo Odeyingbo left the Green Bay game with a quad injury. Austin Booker leads the team with four sacks, and he can’t do it alone.
Then hand it to Bijan and watch. Bijan Robinson has 580 rushing yards at 5.7 per carry, and he’s about to face a Bears front that ESPN’s Eric Moody notes ranks 29th in run stop win rate. Atlanta can stay on schedule, keep Penix’s ribs out of harm’s way, and play keep-away with a lead.

Caleb’s return isn’t a magic switch. Yes, Williams is the cure for what ails Chicago’s offense. When he got hurt in Week 2, he had the third-best Total QBR in the league, and Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum have combined for four interceptions and two touchdowns since. Ian Rapoport reported Monday that Williams is trending toward a return. But he’s coming off a Grade 2 hamstring strain after three straight missed games, and he was leading all quarterbacks in rushing yards when he went down. A guy nursing a hamstring isn’t going to be that guy on Sunday. Ben Johnson also has a Thursday game against New England four days later to think about, and this offense coughed it up five times in Green Bay last week.
Here’s how I get burned. If Penix can’t go and Tagovailoa starts, this pick is off. Watch the practice reports before you fire, and expect the line to jump if he’s ruled out. With Penix in, I’d play it down to +2.5. Chicago’s defense also has one elite trait: opponents convert just 26.0% of their third downs, second-best in the NFL. Atlanta’s own secondary is patched together with A.J. Terrell Jr. on IR, and Falcons defenders have just one interception all season. If Williams looks like his old self, this turns into a shootout that Chicago can win.
Projected score: Falcons 27, Bears 24. Bijan grinds the clock, London wins his matchup, and the home dog cashes the ticket outright.
