Rays vs Guardians Predictions, Odds for ALCS Game 4 (Oct 16)

Tampa Bay Rays at Cleveland Guardians
Friday, October 16, 2026
8:00 PM ET, Progressive Field (TBS)

The Rays are a slight road favorite at -111 (Guardians -109), and the total is 6.5. My play is the Tampa Bay Rays on the moneyline.

Cleveland won Game 3 with its usual recipe: five innings from a starter, then a bullpen that buried a lineup that couldn’t buy a hit. Tonight the Guardians are missing the first ingredient. There’s no announced starter, and while books list Tanner Bibee, everybody expects a bullpen game. Tampa Bay hands the ball to the one pitcher Cleveland hasn’t scored on all year, yet the market prices this like a coin flip. I’ll take the team with an actual starting pitcher.

Nick Martinez already has this lineup’s number

Martinez is a swingman who made a career-high 31 starts this year and went 15-6 with a 3.10 ERA. He spent this series in limbo, sitting in the bullpen, then the dugout, then the bench, with his cleats on just in case. “Whatever the team needs, I’m up for it,” he said.

What the Rays need is a rerun. Cleveland saw him twice, lost 1-0 right here in April and 3-0 in July, and went 13 innings without scoring a run.

He won’t blow anybody away. He just doesn’t hand out free passes, so Cleveland has to string hits together, and that’s a chore for this lineup against right-handers. José Ramírez hit .212 against righties this year and Jo Adell hit .209. Ramírez is 6-for-12 in this series, though, so he’s the one to watch.

The Guardians need 27 outs from the back of the shelf

The bulk candidates are Bibee, Slade Cecconi and lefty Joey Cantillo, maybe behind an opener. Bibee (4.36 ERA) got knocked around late in the season and recorded one out in his only playoff appearance. Cecconi had a 4.91 ERA. Cantillo walked 81 in 159 innings, which is a lot of free traffic.

The arms Cleveland actually trusts are a problem, too. Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, Erik Sabrowski and Daniel Espino all pitched Thursday, and Smith has worked seven of Cleveland’s eight playoff games. The pitch counts were light, but now it’s back-to-back days with a whole game to cover. Tampa Bay’s late crew is rested. Closer Bryan Baker is 4-for-4 in postseason saves, and he, Cam Booser and Kevin Kelly have had two days off. Thursday, the bullpen edge belonged to Cleveland. Tonight it belongs to Tampa Bay.

Yes, the Rays still have to hit, and Kevin Cash said as much after Game 3. They went 3-for-30 in that one, and Junior Caminero has fanned seven times in 11 at-bats. But that was against Gavin Williams and Smith. Tonight it’s Cleveland’s middle relief stretched into starter innings, mostly right-handed, and righties are what this lineup feeds on: a .752 OPS against them this year, compared with .679 against lefties.

So a 98-win No. 1 seed that beat Cleveland in five of their six regular-season meetings gets a near pick’em price with the better starter and the fresher bullpen. I’ll take the Rays at -110 or -111 and would play it up to about -125.

What keeps this from being a bigger bet. The sky, first. The National Weather Service has a 62 percent chance of rain at 8 PM ET (worse earlier in the evening), temperatures in the low 50s and gusts topping 30 mph. A long delay could chase Martinez early and erase the edge. If the game is postponed, Games 4 and 5 move to Saturday and Sunday in Cleveland, and the pitching could change to Drew Rasmussen against Foster Griffin. This pick needs Martinez pitching Friday. If that changes, start over. Some schedules still list the original 6 PM ET slot, but MLB’s plan moved Game 4 to 8 PM ET once the NLCS ended in a sweep. Confirm first pitch before you bet.

Martinez isn’t bulletproof, either. The quality of contact against him says he pitched more like a 4.00 ERA guy than a 3.10. He doesn’t miss many bats, and he gave up 22 homers. His one playoff start lasted 3.2 innings. Cleveland’s staff set down 16 of the last 17 Rays on Thursday, and this team keeps finding unlikely heroes. Ask Petey Halpin.

Projected score: Rays 4, Guardians 2.

Cleveland’s bullpen game springs a leak somewhere around the fifth, Martinez hands a lead to a rested Baker, and the series is tied at two apiece.

The Pick: Tampa Bay Rays ML (-111)
