ALCS Game 3 Prediction: Rays vs Guardians Under Pick

Tampa Bay Rays at Cleveland Guardians
Thursday, October 15, 2026
1:00 PM ET, Progressive Field (TBS)

Cleveland is a -130 favorite (Rays +110), and the total has dropped from 7 to 6.5. My play is Under 6.5, still available at even money at the best books.

Somewhere in downtown Cleveland, the groundskeepers got the memo before the rest of us did. Thursday-night rain was headed for Progressive Field, so MLB shoved first pitch up five hours, from 6 PM to 1 PM ET. Series tied 1-1. Same stadium. Same two clubs that mirror each other so closely Kevin Cash said so out loud. Completely different light. And that light matters more than the rain ever will.

Williams just got his favorite toy back

Gavin Williams is the hottest arm left in October. Since Sept. 1 he has a 2.25 ERA with 68 strikeouts in 40 innings. In the postseason he has punched out 24 hitters in 11.2 innings without allowing a home run, and his 12 strikeouts in ALDS Game 5 tied the Guardians’ franchise playoff record. He already owned Tampa Bay once this year: 7.2 innings, one unearned run and nine Ks at this very park on April 29.

None of that is the sneaky part. Williams posted a 2.42 ERA in 13 day starts this season and a 4.82 ERA at night. The forecast just handed Cleveland’s ace the split he thrives in. He’ll tell you game times don’t matter because his routine never changes. The numbers disagree, and loudly.

Behind him, Cleveland’s bullpen is fully rested after Wednesday’s off day. Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis skipped Game 2, and Shawn Armstrong hasn’t allowed a run in 5.1 postseason innings. Progressive Field already plays as a mild pitcher’s park, especially for homers, and a dry, mild afternoon with a light easterly breeze won’t help anybody launch one.

Two pitching staffs, one low-scoring habit

These clubs don’t beat each other with fireworks. Tampa Bay took five of six from Cleveland in the regular season, and most of those wins looked like this: 3-2, 1-0, 3-0, 1-0. The one Cleveland win was that Williams gem in April. The under is 8-2 in their last 10 meetings, and the Rays are 4-1 to the under this postseason, including a 1-0 ALDS opener and Tuesday’s 3-1 Game 2 win.

Cash had it right. These teams mirror each other: pitching first, defense next, and just enough chaos to steal a run. Cleveland’s bats don’t scare anybody against right-handers (a .706 OPS) and get even quieter in day games. José Ramírez hasn’t found his swing against righties in a season interrupted by hamate surgery, Jo Adell has been even colder, and Brayan Rocchio is 2-for-22 this October. Chase DeLauter is the exception, hitting .346 with almost no strikeouts, but one bat doesn’t float a total.

Jax can keep it quiet. The bridge is the question.

Griffin Jax draws his first career postseason start with a 0.90 ERA over his last five outings. He has been comfortable in this building too, posting a 2.19 ERA in 13 relief trips to the mound at Progressive Field. Cleveland’s current hitters haven’t squared him up much, and Steven Kwan is 0-for-10 against him.

The catch is length. He hasn’t thrown more than 74 pitches in a start since July, and he hasn’t covered five innings in more than three weeks since returning from elbow discomfort. Bryan Baker has saved all four Rays postseason wins. Getting the ball to him cleanly is the puzzle.

What could go wrong

Game 1 already smashed a 6.5 total with 10 runs. Tampa Bay hits righties well (.752 OPS) and refuses to strike out, and Yandy Díaz is 7-for-15 against Williams for his career. Junior Caminero has mashed right-handers all year and has already taken Williams deep. If Jax exits early and the bridge leaks the way Cole Sulser and Tyler Wells did in Game 1, one crooked inning turns a sharp under into a sweaty one. And the Rays don’t need hits to get there. All three of their Game 2 runs were unearned.

Projected score: Guardians 3, Rays 2.

Williams works into the sixth and gives up a run or two. Jax gets through the order twice with one run on the board, Cleveland scratches out two more against the Tampa Bay bridge, and the Guardians’ rested bullpen finishes it in the afternoon sun.
