Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons
Tuesday, October 20, 2026
3:00 PM ET, Little Caesars Arena

Boston is laying 1.5 points on the road with the total at 221.5. My play is the Detroit Pistons +1.5 (-110 at FanDuel).

Detroit opened as the favorite. Then the books got a good look at Jayson Tatum and Paul George and swung it four points toward Boston, from Pistons -2.5 to Celtics -1.5 at DraftKings. That’s a bet on the names, and I’ll happily take the home team and the hook.

Two teams, one number. Last season these were the East’s top two seeds, and their underlying numbers are nearly identical. Detroit finished +8.2 points per 100 possessions better than its opponents (third in the league). Boston was +8.1 (fourth). When two teams grade out that evenly, the home team should be laying a couple of points, which is exactly where this opened. Detroit went 31-9 at Little Caesars Arena and won those games by more than 10 points a night.

The Celtics who earned those numbers aren’t here anymore. Boston’s offense ranked second in the NBA last season, and that version had Jaylen Brown scoring 28.7 a night. Brown is now in Philadelphia, traded to the same Sixers team that came back from 3-1 down to knock Boston out in the first round. Tatum is back from his Achilles tear, but the comeback sample is thin: 16 regular-season games on 41% shooting. George is 36 and played 37 games last year. “Hopefully, I can remain healthy,” he told The Boston Globe. Add Mitchell Robinson’s debut at center and a starting five Joe Mazzulla still hasn’t officially named, and this is a brand-new team playing its first games that count.

Detroit kept its core and fixed its flaw. Four of the five starters are back: All-NBA First Teamer Cade Cunningham, Duncan Robinson, Ausar Thompson and a newly paid Jalen Duren, who averaged a 19.5-and-10.5 double-double last season. The one thing Detroit couldn’t do was shoot (29th in three-point attempt rate), so the front office added John Collins (40.6% from deep last year) and Isaiah Joe (42.3%). J.B. Bickerstaff isn’t sweating the Boston hype: “We don’t pay attention to the outside noise. People’s words have no impact on us.”

Where the game gets decided. Boston lives behind the arc. It ranked fourth in the share of shots taken from three, and Detroit allowed the lowest effective field-goal percentage in the league (a shooting number that gives threes extra credit). Detroit wins on the glass and at the free-throw line, with the third-best offensive rebounding rate and the fifth-best rate of getting to the stripe. Duren against Robinson and Neemias Queta is the fight to watch. Thompson, an All-Defense pick who averaged two steals a game, gets the first crack at Tatum. Detroit also owned this matchup a year ago, going 3-1 with wins by 6 and 1 at home. Three of the four were decided by six or fewer, which is why that half-point matters.

Why I could be wrong. Tatum might be a whole lot better than his comeback numbers. He put up 23.3 points, 10.7 rebounds and 6.8 assists in the playoffs and averaged 21 points in two preseason games. Boston also doesn’t beat itself. It had the second-lowest turnover rate in the league, which takes away Detroit’s favorite trick of turning steals into layups. Detroit has baggage, too. It traded away Isaiah Stewart’s toughness, needed seven games to get past the No. 8 seed, and lost Game 7 at home to Cleveland by 31. Cunningham coughed it up 5.6 times a game in that playoff run. At 1.5 points, one late Tatum three can decide it. I’m playing this at +1.5 or +1, I’d switch to the moneyline at +100 if it moves to a pick’em, and I’d pass if Detroit gets back to a two-point favorite.

How I see it finishing: Pistons 112, Celtics 108. Detroit owns the boards, gets to the line in the fourth quarter, and Boston’s new pieces spend the afternoon learning each other’s spots.

The Pick: Detroit Pistons +1.5 (-110)
