Army at Tulsa
Friday, October 23, 2026
8:30 PM ET, H.A. Chapman Stadium, Tulsa, OK
Tulsa is a 1.5-point home favorite with the total sitting at 53.5. My play is Army +1.5.
Cale Hellums ran for 159 yards and three touchdowns against Tulsa last November and still walked off the Michie Stadium turf a loser. Army led 25-14 in the fourth quarter, then watched Seth Morgan’s 27-yard field goal beat it with 12 seconds left. Hellums gets his rematch Friday night, and he’s showing up hot.
Hellums is on a heater, and Army doesn’t fumble
Last Saturday against Florida Atlantic, Army scored touchdowns on its first seven possessions, ran for 479 yards and threw the ball twice. Twice. Hellums piled up 195 yards and five rushing touchdowns, tying a program record, in a 56-24 rout. He’s up to 13 rushing scores on the year, and Army leads the country at 357.5 rushing yards a game.
The efficiency numbers back up the highlight reel. Army’s offense ranks around second in FBS in EPA per play, which is just a measure of how much each snap moves a team toward points, and it stays on schedule more often than almost anyone. Against FBS teams, the Black Knights have scored on every red-zone trip and converted half of their third downs.
Tulsa’s whole identity is the takeaway. The Golden Hurricane are +11 in turnover margin, third in the nation, and they force 2.3 giveaways a game against FBS opponents. Problem is, Army hasn’t lost a fumble all season and gives the ball away 0.4 times a game. You can’t pick the pocket of a team that never takes its hand off its wallet.

Tulsa has seen this movie, and the ending stunk
This is Tulsa’s third straight option-style opponent, and you could argue that’s an advantage. The tape argues otherwise. Two weeks ago, Navy ran 67 times for 386 yards on this defense. The Midshipmen lost four turnovers and still won 34-26, erasing a 12-point second-half deficit with fourth-quarter drives that ate 6:43 and 6:16 of clock. Tulsa won the turnover battle by four and lost anyway. That’s the blueprint, and nobody runs it better than Army.
Tulsa gives up 202.7 rushing yards a game against FBS teams, which ranks 123rd, and the linebacker room looks thin. Last week’s report, as aggregated by a third party, had C.J. Turner and Raymir Coney out for the season and William Alexander and Elijah Wilson out. The official American Conference availability list won’t land until around game day, so check it, but if that group is still short, guess who has to fit the dive and chase the pitch.
When Tulsa does get the ball, it has trouble keeping it. Its offense lands a successful play only about 40% of the time, which sits in the bottom quarter of FBS, and it converts just 30.2% of third downs in FBS games. Army controls the clock at 34:42 a game, third in the country. Tulsa should get a handful of possessions, and it can’t afford to waste any of them.
Where my Army ticket gets nervous
Army’s defense is a genuine liability, and I won’t pretend otherwise. By opponent-adjusted EPA per play allowed, it ranks 137th out of 138 FBS teams. It lets opponents convert better than half their third downs, and it almost never gets to the quarterback. Baylor Hayes has thrown one interception all season, so don’t count on gifts, and havoc.football rates Tulsa’s offense 13th in explosiveness. Two or three chunk plays to Oran Singleton Jr. can undo a lot of Army ball control.
The market has leaned Tulsa’s way this week, and BetMGM is now dealing -2. Army’s linebacker room is banged up too. It started a freshman there against FAU, and like Tulsa, it gets only six days to regroup. Four of its six games have been decided by four points or fewer, and it’s 2-3-1 against the spread. This is a coin flip with a lean, not a lock.
Army walks out of Tulsa with the win
ESPN’s FPI actually makes Army the slight favorite to win, at 51.5%, and even havoc’s model has Tulsa by only 1.3 points. With the hook, Army just has to win or lose by a single point, and +2 (-110) at BetMGM is the best number out there. I’d play it at +1.5 or better. If it flips to a pick’em, take the Army moneyline at even money or better. The total? Leave it alone. The market already shoved it from 50.5 to 53.5.
The Black Knights grind out another long night of dives and keepers, Tulsa hits a couple of shots over the top, and Hellums settles last year’s score late. My number: Army 31, Tulsa 27.
