Air Force at Wyoming
Friday, October 23, 2026
9:00 PM ET, War Memorial Stadium, Laramie, WY

Air Force is a 5-point road favorite with a total of 44.5. My play is Air Force -5.

The betting market is scared of a ghost. Air Force hasn’t won in Laramie since 2012, five straight losses at 7,220 feet, and the money has dragged this line from an opener of -6.5 or -7 down to -5, with DraftKings dealing -4.5. But the Falcons who keep losing up there aren’t the ones getting off the bus Friday, and the Wyoming defense waiting for them is the wrong kind of defense for this fight.

The backup quarterback isn’t a backup problem. Air Force lost starter Liam Szarka for the season in the 14-9 win over Navy on October 3, and the offense hasn’t blinked. Sophomore Evan Medders is 2-0 as a starter, winning 28-7 at Northern Illinois and 41-31 over UNLV, with 266 rushing yards and five touchdowns across those two games. Against UNLV he set career highs with 152 yards and three scores while Air Force ran for 430 as a team. He’s averaging 7.2 yards a carry. Wyoming coach Jay Sawvel put it simply: “He’s faster than Szarka.” Medders is 5-of-10 passing for 65 yards on the year, and Air Force does not care.

Wyoming is built wrong for this matchup. Air Force has the highest offensive success rate in FBS at 54.4%, which means more than half of its snaps gain enough to keep the offense ahead of schedule. It leads FBS in rushing against FBS opponents, and havoc.football ranks its offensive line seventh in line yards, a measure of how much push the blockers get. Wyoming’s defensive front ranks 130th in that same category and sits near the bottom of FBS against the run by almost any measure. Defensive coordinator Aaron Bohl admitted his group played “soft” at times last week against NIU. Sawvel’s own scouting report sounds like a warning: “You better get them on the ground. That’s the first thing you better do.”

Sawvel also pointed out that Air Force is 8-1 in the last nine meetings when it puts together four or more drives of eight-plus plays. It had five of those against UNLV. That’s how the Falcons win: they take the air out of the stadium one four-yard run at a time.

Wyoming needs gifts, and Air Force doesn’t hand them out. Tyler Hughes was the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week after torching NIU for 183 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. Zoom out, though, and Hughes has three touchdown passes against seven interceptions. This offense throws picks, takes sacks and settles for field goals in the red zone, and it scores 17.8 points a game against FBS teams.

To win, Wyoming needs turnovers. Air Force hasn’t lost a fumble all season, and it hasn’t even put the ball on the ground since the second quarter against New Mexico last year, a streak of 549 plays. It’s also 13-of-15 on fourth down. Wyoming’s defense, meanwhile, forces 0.3 takeaways a game, 135th in FBS.

Then there’s the weather. Early-week forecasts call for kickoff temperatures in the high 40s and falling, with a west-southwest wind around 20 mph. That’s still days out, so keep an eye on it, but if it holds, it hurts the team that throws 38.6% of the time a lot more than the one that barely throws at all.

Why I could be wrong. Laramie has been a house of horrors for Air Force, and Wyoming won those five home meetings by an average of 7.2 points. The Cowboys are 3-0 at home, have won two straight, and will be wearing their all-black “Cowboys and Coal” uniforms in front of a Friday-night crowd. Hughes’s legs are a real problem for an Air Force defense that’s only middle of the pack per play. If Wyoming forces Medders into third-and-long, the Falcons have no plan B. Kicker Erik Sandvik is 10-for-10, which keeps a backdoor field goal in play. And I’m betting against a line move. Wyoming’s injury news is still unconfirmed too: Sawvel expected running back Tote Harris to clear concussion protocol, safety Brooklyn Cheek’s leg injury had no timeline, and DT Dante Drake was set to be listed questionable. The Mountain West availability report should land around Wednesday.

The number is the tell. havoc’s model has Air Force by 8.2, and ESPN’s FPI gives the Falcons an 80.2% chance to win. The market has moved the other direction, and that gap is the bet. The best price I see is -4 (-110) at BetRivers, with -4.5 at DraftKings. I’ll play it up to -6.5 and back off at -7. With a win, Air Force also clinches bowl eligibility. The total stays on the shelf: the wind and Air Force’s clock control argue Under, while the models argue Over.

Hughes makes a couple of plays with his legs, but Air Force wears the Cowboys down for four quarters and finally leaves Laramie happy. Put me down for Air Force 27, Wyoming 17.

The Pick: Air Force -5
